Won't let me read the article without subscribing to the website. Sorry, JJ, I just don't care about you that much, not even for a "free trial".

I hardly consider a 5 year break to be a blow to his career.

I hardly consider a 5 year break to be a blow to his career.
Moreover, I never got the sense that Abrams' mainstream mega-success career was all that personal/artistic to begin with, but more strictly opportunistic and savvy with producing the most slickly marketable packages. He's always been a "marketing guy". He talks that way, makes movies that way. So even after x-amount of downtime he's the type who could more easily step back into the machine with the role of showrunning, branding, rebranding etc. It's all the hollow same.

What he was doing in 2015 was saying the right thing at the right time. He saw there was a market for prequel bashing, that he could get away with plagiarism of the OT, and he lapped it up, with all the media - as befitting of Abrams - in tow.
He's the kind of guy who likes to be seen coolly riding the wave of what's hip. He takes no risks, he has no bright ideas, he has no courage to take a minority opinion. He is the living, breathing definition of bland. He should stick to soap operas.
