"The Dark side of the Force is Forums are a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural enlightening"
As planned, here is the new dedicated thread for discussing JJ Abram's second effort at Star Wars. I've now seen the film - we got it a day earlier in Europe, I believe - and I have quite a lot of thoughts to share with you, including a few amusing stories from the place I saw it at. When you've viewed the film for yourself, feel free to contribute below, no matter if you loved it, liked it, hated it or considerate it the worst SW ever made.
Here's a suggested list of topics to break the film into (I will try my best to be neutral) :
*************************************************** SPOILERS BELOW **********************************************************
Tokenism [ toh-kuh-niz-uh m ]
Noun
The practice of making only a token effort or doing no more than the minimum, esp in order to comply with a law
Retcon [ ret-kon ]
Noun
Retroactive continuity. Reworking established facts in a work of fiction to allow for further work in sequels or spin-offs.
- Adherence to, and honouring of the PT - because this is a Prequels forum, and the filmmakers promised a lot here
- Anakin Skywalker - Discuss in relation to these topics:
- No-show - the sheer nerve to leave out the very progenitor of the Skywalker clan in a so-called "Skywalker saga"
- Abram's willingness to bring back everyone else in this trilogy - including rusty and retired actors, who I'll let you to guess
- Trivialisation - reduced to a mere voice among countless others, and one the average viewer is sadly unlikely to connect with the fallen hero of the PT
- Hayden Christensen - The director's problem with the actor
- Writing - The dialogue, the humour, the general storyline
- Music - Did you find anything memorable in John William's final SW score? Is it too dependent on Rey's theme?
- Sound design - of the lightsabres, the spaceships, the heavy distortion of Palpatine's voice etc
- Art direction - The design of the sets, the outdoor locations and the planets
- Visual Effects - What CGI was believable and what wasn't? It seems omnipresent, with Abrams being called out on the use of green screen on the dessert planet
- Palpatine's survival - Was the explanation plausible? What does this mean for ROTJ and Anakin's "victory"?
- Palpatine characterisation - What did you think of his new Force powers, the way he interacts with other characters and his "secret" lab?
- Snoke - Were his origins convincing? How does this retcon now affect TFA and TLJ knowing that their villain is just a tool?
- Leia - How convincing was the deleted footage's repurposing? What did you think of her death?
- The adventures of the trio - Rey with Finn & Poe on Dessert Planet #3
- The revelation of Rey's ancestry - The ret-conning of TLJ's subversive "nobody" mantra. Did you feel that Palpatine was implied as asexual in the PT?
- Lightsabre duels - Kylo vs Rey #1, Kylo Ren vs Rey #2 etc...
- The space battle - Star Destroyers featuring Death Star cannons vs Poe and company
- Han Solo as a Force Ghost - How did it make you feel seeing a non-Force user suddenly pop up from the grave?
- Luke - as a Force-user Force Ghost, and again stuck on the island
- The finale - Palpatine battling Rey & Kylo Ren (Or was it Ben?)
- The Force Healing - Or Force Resuscitation? Rey to Kylo, and then vice-versa.
- The kiss - How do you feel about Abram's catering to "Reylo". Please contrast this with these other writing decisions:
- Rey's dismissiveness of Finn throughout the trilogy, despite him showing genuine interest in TFA and being heroic in TROS
- Padmé's powerful rejection of Anakin on Mustafar, though she is classified as a "weak character" by the cynics in ROTS
- Leia's unwillingness to show any love for her redeemed father in the ST - this is a loooooong shot from a kiss, and acceptance is the least someone who destroyed the Sith deserves
- The fine line between accepting someone's redemption via an emotional embrace and spontaneous, and distasteful French kissing
- The ending - Did two left-justified Force Ghosts and self-adoption "melt your minds" as Kevin Smith told us many months ago? Was there enough mystery box for you?
- The new minor characters - Useful additions to the film or meaningless screentime?
- Lando - Was a charismatic performance from Billy Dee enough to warrant his character being pulled back for nostalgia's sake?
- Droids - The use of C3P0, R2, BB8 and the new cone thing
- The First Order - Their portrayal, including the new General Price, their weapons and whether or not you found the traitor plot believable?
- Performances of the cast - What did you think of the acting? In particular from Daisy and Adam.
Some more topics
- Making of the film - How do you feel about the condensing of the filming and post-production stages compared with earlier instalments?
- Censorship - Will the brief lesbian kiss show up in the Chinese version? What great lengths of double standards are Disney prepared to go to?
- JJ Abrams - Do you feel he paid any attention to the uptick in Prequel support across the last few years? Did he take on board TFA criticisms? How do you feel he treated TLJ and Johnson?
- Critics reviews of TROS - For accurate comparisons with the prequels *non manipulated* Rotten Tomatoes scores, please see this archived link from 2008, which can be credited to Cryogenic as detailed in his research in the comments section here.
Notice that TROS, at 58%, currently sits below TPM (62%) and AOTC (65%), two film considered to have been scathed by the critics.
- Potentially weird balance of the Star Wars Fandom - It looks like a lot of TLJ fans, PT fans and critics who fell over backwards for both TFA and TLJ may all soon be united in their condemnation of this film.
- Reassessment of TFA ? - Will the strong reaction against Episodes IX "awaken" people into taking a harder look at Abrams's first Star Wars effort?
Notice that I've changed my profile to Hayden Christensen - just to give us all an idea of what he might have looked like on-screen. I don't think it can be emphasised enough at this point, I honestly don't

I haven't seen the movie, won't go see the movie and have no intention of ever seeing the movie. But I'm aware of the leaks and the narrative, all of which have been confirmed to be true (there are whole sequences online now). So there are many things that can be easily pointed out and judged in regards to this. - Adherence to, and Celebration of the PT - because this is a Prequels forum, and the filmmakers promised a lot here
If I was into licensed fan fiction, the only thing I would "demand" is adherence and respect for the six movies. Not necessarily celebration, because that's a bit petty and self-indulgent. And what deserves celebration is a bit subjective. From what I've seen, adherence and respect for Lucas' works were not only absent but discarded. But that's been a thing since TFA. - Anakin Skywalker - Discuss in relation to these topics:
- No-show - the sheer nerve to leave out the very progenitor of the Skywalker clan in a so-called "Skywalker clan"
- Abram's willingness to bring back everyone else in this trilogy - including rusty and retired actors, who I'll let you to guess
- Hayden Christensen - The director's problem with the actor
- Trivialisation - reduced to a mere voice among countless others, and one the average viewer is sadly unlikely to connect with the fallen hero of the PT
It's ridiculous. Not only was his journey and feats ignored, but they were taken away from him and given to Rey (even the name!). There's no weight, morality and thematic lesson. Anakin defeated the Sith and fulfilled his prophetic destiny through compassion and selflessness. Rey defeated Palpatine through sheer power. How and why she got that power is (once again) left unexplained, a constant in this Disney trilogy. And don't get me started on Palpatine. Not only is he back , but he's shoved into this out of nowhere, at the very end. A testament to the lack of thought or planning behind this trilogy. - Writing - The dialogue, the humour, the general storyline
A pathetic effort to imitate the OT, and failing spectacularly at it. - Music - Did you find anything memorable in John William's final SW score?
The only thing that I thought it would be worthy of the Disney trilogy would be the John Williams scores. Sadly, the ones from TFA and TLJ have been pretty forgettable. Don't know how the music is with this one, but I would be surprised if there was a drastic increase in quality. - Art direction - The design of the sets, the planets and the CGI quality
The aliens of the Disney trilogy are all very un-Star Wars in terms of design. I jokingly call them 'foreskin aliens' because unfortunately that's what they all look like. - Palpatine's survival - Was the explanation plausible? What does this mean to Return of the Jedi and to Anakin's "victory" in that film?
There's no plausible explanation for Palpatine's survival by default (McDiarmid confirmed that to Lucas Palpatine wouldn't be alive), and I don't think they made an effort in trying to explain it either. As for what it means to ROTJ and Anakin's feats? It directly contradicts them and makes it all pointless. In fact, they make a bunch of characters look bad too, specially Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda. - The revelation of Rey's ancestry - The ret-conning of TLJ's subversive "nobody" mantra. Did you feel that Palpatine was implied as asexual in the PT?
It's all so ridiculous and contrived. To give Palpatine an offspring is just stupid. Not only is it something out of character, but why would he bother with having apprentices when he had his own offspring? There are other problems and repercussions as well, but the very premise is stupid beyond words. I don't know if he's asexual or not. It's irrelevant. The Sith and the Jedi are monastic orders. They may not be celibate, but they are devoted to a spiritual way of life. Indulging in sex and other lustful aspects of life are not part of their ways. They are beyond that. - The space battle - Star Destroyers featuring Death Star cannons vs Poe and company
'Star Destroyers featuring Death Star cannons' Yeah, I don't think that needs a comment... - Han Solo as a Force Ghost - How did it make you feel seeing a non-Force user suddenly pop up from the grave?
Another example of stupidity that goes against the established lore. - The finale - Palpatine battling Rey & Kylo Ren (Or was it Ben?)
"I am all the Sith" "I am all the Jedi" What the heck is this?! - The Force Healing - Or Force Resuscitation? Rey to Kylo, and then vice-versa.
Shoved in out of nowhere, no explanation. Everyone is doing it now as if it's the most natural thing in the world... I heard it's in The Mandalorian too.

I'm on the party of AlexRD here; I didn't and I won't see the movie, also I didn't saw Ep.8 but as all is in the internet I would participate in this discussion.
First of all, the only interesting thing to me is the fan and critic reaction (the former is much more interesting, of course). It didn't happen something I didn't expect, but after all, they are doing this since Ep.7 and I honestly don't understand the high hopes of some fans that something would change: it won't and unfortunately, it didn't. The movie makers are pretending that the prequels didn't exist but they are doing something even worse with the original trilogy: they destroyed every single piece of its legacy (that's why it always amazed me how the OT fans liked so much Episode 7 that began it all). The prequels are safe, as I once told you Archduke, because no one could ever steal Anakin comeback to the light side because it is done and cannot be undone. Is not that they didn't try other things but this is untouchable. What they did do in the end in a nutshell is that they showed that the evil won: the Emperor is all powerful, the Palpatine's offspring not only defeated everyone but she even stole Skywalker name ( i.e. the essence of Skywalker) and yes, the good guys are bunch of incompentent loosers who in the end would disapear forever. Ironic, isn't it? Is the same Disney tried to do with George Lucas legacy. But you shouldn't be surprised at all: the new movie authors practically work for an evil Empire. I personally would pretend that this bad fanfiction is not part of the Saga at all.
P.S. From the trailers I see that Daisy Ridley again looks constipated instead of concentrated and is not that she cannot act at all.

I do intend to see the movie. I pretty much know the entire movie from beginning to horrible end at this point. But I feel like I still have to see it for myself. I am 45 years old, been a Star Wars fan since I was 5, grew up with the OT, loved the PT, but as thoe of you that know me from the other forums, I have no love for this Trilogy. I still feel obliged to see how this plays out on screen though. This is the first movie since ROTJ that I have not seen a Star Wars movie on Opening Night, and lets face it, this "premiere nights" are now the actual opening nights.
As for the reviews.. Critics are destroying this movie, right now it's at a 58% on Rotten. Audiences are giving it a little more love with a score of 85%. However, that score from audiences has been dropping since yesterday when it opened up at an 89%.
It's funny reading the social media and other forums about the reviews and reactions. I remember all the arguments for TFA and TLJ.. For TFA it was that the critics and audiences both agreed that TFA was a great movie, so that was fact..
TLJ comes along and it gets universal praise from the critics, and gets decimated by the audiences. The arguments for TLJ being a great movie was all that mattered was the critics reviews because Star Wars fans don't know what they want, or there was bots, or hackers, or review bombs etc etc.
Now that TROS is getting decimated by the critics, those same people on the forum I won't mention here, are saying critic reviews never matter, it's audience reactions.
The mental gymnastics it takes to convince and justify to ones self what they like. For me, I never cared what audiences or critics say about a movie.
I love Man Of Steel, I love 47 Ronin, I hate Avatar! I like what I like... I don't like what I don't like. No critic or audience score will change that.
So once I see it, I will come back here and give my detailed opinions for those that care. H
I will say, for those that are PT fans and are hopeful for some connective tissue between the trilogies, from what I hear, do not hold your breath.

Let me get this straight. Negative posts about a movie by people who are actively flaunting that they will literally never know what they're talking about because they refuse to even see the movie they're complaining about? This might actually be even worse than prequel bashing.
"PEOPLE HATE WHAT THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND."

What exactly do we not understand?
I do know what I'm talking about because I have seen what I've seen. And what I've seen is not speculation or made up.
You're free to address the criticisms made so far and point out how those same criticisms are addressed and taken care of by seeing the movie. I don't think you'll be able to do that, but I don't mind being proven wrong.

I agree, Mike. We're in quite a strange place right now. We have critics and fans heavily disliking it, though each for very different reasons, while we have other fans who are so exhausted by TLJ that they're willing to grant TROS a thumbs up simply for its retconing.
I find it astonishing that reviewers are lashing out against barely-existent "fan service", whilst on the other extreme, a section of fans think Abrams did well on this front (including lukewarm prequel fans). If honouring the PT and Anakin falls under "fan service", then TROS fails abysmally. That the name "Anakin" is not even said once, as far as I can recall, speaks a lot to the utter phoniness of this "Skywalker Saga" marketing.
If there's any positive to take from the negative reception, it's that it should soon spark a complete reassessment of the merits of this trilogy. I think a lot of more people are going to modify their views on TFA, and understand how disjointed the 3 films now look.

They Need to Retcon these Movies They're a Black Mark on The franchise
If TFA was a "rehash", TLJ "subversion", then TROS is the "retcon".
Overall, I think the Sequel Trilogy is now an incoherent mess, and in the unenviable position of having instalments that clash with each other. The cynics of the prequels can slander its dialogue all they want, for at least they had a unified vision that told us a fascinating story on both a personal and macro level. I wonder if George Lucas is laughing at Abrams right now?
What I will say though, to the credit of TROS, is that it does improve on a lot of the things that were so poorly done in both TFA and TLJ. I think it is a much more re-watchable film, that brings the very best out of Finn and Poe, and has made me like them for once, and recognises C3PO's importance. The problem is, Palpatine's return makes absolutely no sense, Anakin is irrelevant and the ending leaves with you with no hope.
More worryingly, TROS introduces a serious plot hole into the Prequel Trilogy:
Why couldn't Anakin Force Heal his mother? Why couldn't Anakin Force Heal his wife?
If he truly was the Chosen One, he should have be able, or at least to put his mind to rest in the knowledge that he could. And if his grandson is capable of doing it, why can't he? The more I think this one though, the more I find TLJ's "Force Projection" to be of little concern - just a silly tactic for Luke to be employing.

My oh my what a dreary, dim corner of Star Wars fandom. It's a shame that Prequel-gushers have become what they always fought against. I'll go ahead and post my little slapdash review of the ST, copy-pasted from TFN forum. Typed with my middle finger on my phone:
TFN veteran and oldschool master Prequel defender reporting in for my opinions on the sequel trilogy. Like with the Prequels, I reserved my judgment until the full story was told. I don't know why so many people jump the gun and judge a trilogy before it's finished. Anyway, I found Ep 7 to be slow, boring, and too safe but I did like all the new characters. Daisy Ridley is a total heartthrob and she is a great over-the-top type actor. Perfect for Star Wars.
Ep 8 was great to me, mainly because of the Reylo tension and new Force abilities. Kylo destroying his mask always gives me chills, and the Force-skyping totally captures the first-love type feeling. Honestly, Rey and Ben might be the only relationship in Star Wars that feels natural to me. I loved the Force Island, with the porgs and Force nuns. It was too long, much like Ep 2, but I gotta say I was satisfied with Luke's sacrifice and it still moves me to tears sometimes. The fathier chase would be my only gripe with Rian's movie. It just didn't feel like Star Wars, especially with Rose's sappy theme music. Rose is a very sweet character though, and I like her a lot. I appreciated the Snoke twist. When they sliced him in half, it was the first time since the OT where I was on the edge of my seat and wondered what could possibly happen next. The look on Rey's face when she rejects Kylo. The set, the fire, the falling sparks against the blackness of space. So good. It felt like the most daring Star Wars movie to me, despite its flaws, and that kind of mirrors my sentiments about my beloved Prequels.
I did not have high expectations for The Rise of Skywalker. I thought the name sounded corny, the word around town was that it was the worst SW movie ever, and I accidentally read a spoiler about Rey's lineage the morning before I went in to see it, and I was NOT impressed. The only thing I needed from this movie was for it to end, so I could get on with my life.
Episode 9, though I've only seen it once, could not have been more perfect. I always considered Palpatine to be the real villain, and having Snoke instead would have felt cheap in light of the original 6 movies. I was a fan of the Dark Empire comic (whose story came from George Lucas himself btw), so the choice to bring back Palpatine felt logical and intuitive and it was executed even better than I could have expected. I feel the fast pacing was totally appropriate given how slow 7 and 8 were. There was a lot hanging on this movie, really the same thing happened with the prequels where 1 and 2 beat around the bush, and 3 had to cover a lot of ground, and it worked then and it works now. I enjoyed everything about this movie. It felt a little predictable, but it felt right. The 9th episode in the saga had to really be big, fast, heavy-handed, and nostalgic. I wish the situation between Rose and Finn was given a little more attention, because it was a whole side-plot in 8, but I guess one thing common among all the relationships and crushes in these sequel movies is that everything is basically never vocalized and it's all very between-the-lines. Poe and his old lady friend with the helmet's little non-verbal exchange at the end captures this and it just works. My guess is that Finn kinda friendzoned Rose after Episode 8. Oh well. One of life's bitter pills. I don't understand the criticisms of the first act. The festival scene where the hippie alien girl gives Rey a necklace was so relatable, and the whole sequence was gorgeous and fun. The Force-skype battle where Rey is in Kylo's chambers and Kylo knocks over the basket of red beads/berries into the black and white interior of his ship was so gorgeous. (Black, white, and red are known to be a Satanic color combination, and they are both really angry in the first half of this movie.) I laughed, cried, and most of all, frequently nodded my head in recognition during this film. All the new abilities like objects passing through the Force, and environments combining, it was so psychedelic and it never needed to be explained, these things just rang true. Even much of the dialogue, it was like I already knew it in my heart. JJ, you really exceeded my expectations!
I can't say much on little hidden directorial choices, aside from the obvious BB8 Force-healing D-O, but I'll point out a couple things that seemed like obvious Christian imagery. The battle on Endor was on the water, and Kylo was healed and turned to the lightside in the rain. It totally felt like baptism imagery the way he was being sprinkled. (The Han Force-memory made me cry, of course.) It also seemed like when Rey defeated Palpatine at the end, her lightsabers only reflected the hate-lightening when she made an X with them, a universal symbol for the Cross and Jesus Christ.
I've only seen the movie once, but chances are, I will watch it many, many more times as I feel it's the most fun of all Star Wars movies, and may be my favorite. ROTJ was my favorite as a kid, but the pequels made it retroactively seem kind of cheap-looking and small in scope. So this was like capturing the magic of ROTJ all over again, and that positive glow and sense of closure I used to get watching my old Return of the Jedi VHS tape is back and here to stay!

Don't be fooled by the people who want to convince you this film is good for the simple reason that it's more Star Warsian than the enormous let-down that was The Last Jedi. If those are our standards, if that's how easy we are to satisfy, then I'm afraid we, to use Obi-Wan's words, are "lost!".
I can see why some fans are calling it "a fun movie", but that always comes about by ignoring the place of the film in the wider context: the "Skywalker saga". As a conclusion to 9 films, it is a severely lacking in that the first Skywalker plays, who was so crucial to 1-6, plays no part whatsoever, beyond a voice he shares with not just non-Skywalker Jedi, like Yoda or Qui-Gon, but bizarre, non-significant figures who even I - a hardcore fan - was left wondering was.
If Anakin was the sole voice communing with Rey, then I might have been able to get on board, but the absence of any contact between him and his grandson is incredibly disappointing. Given that it's revealed that it was Palpatine fooling Kylo Ren through the Dark Vader mask all along, would it not have been so fitting - so cathartic - for him to glimpse the real Anakin Skywalker who destroyed the Sith. It could have been the most emotional scene in the whole trilogy, and instead appears to me as its greatest missed opportunity. All the pandering about the Vader mask, and Vader throughout this trilogy and not once is the true man honoured or referenced. I regret to say, It's unforgivable to me.

That's quite a sweeping generalisation there, don't you think? Have you any idea how bad the prequels fans and the actors had it from the bashers not so long ago? There is no comparison to the situation that lead to Ahmed Best almost committing suicide and Jake Lloyd with serious mental health issues after severe bullying. And do you ever wonder why Hayden Christensen never joined social media?
Much of my critique of the Disney Trilogy is based around their horrible attitude (and from JJ Abrams) towards the prequels, which commenters like Cryogenic have long been documenting. And right now I'm laughing at the double standards of the critics to suggest TROS is all fan service, when they never rushed to judge TFA for non-stop pandering to the OT.
If you like The Last Jedi, then good for you. When you visit the locations in Ireland, I'll be glad to see you helping my country's economy out. Fun fact: the island once was an actual monastery for hermit monks. Also, don't come in winter

I see what looks to be a lot of sanctimonious whining. I mean *endless* complaining. I wasn't impressed with TFA. Never once did I go online and expound on it for page after page. All the sequel hate just looks incredibly familiar to me. I would call it lazy, but it looks like a lot of work, and not much fun at all.
Edit: It's not just this forum of course, it's everywhere. I was just under the impression that this forum was more prequel-friendly, and figured if you knew how to enjoy the prequels you wouldn't fall into the criticism loop. I realized by TLJ that was far from the case. It baffles me though that anyone would stick around for a party that they clearly do not like. For what? To ruin it for those of us who WANT to be here? The only reason I showed up was to talk about things I like. Now that I've seen the complete story, and I can make a reasonable judgment about the sequel trilogy, it feels like deja vu when I signed up on TFN after Ep III came out. That's what I'm saying.
