Myself, am about to rock Lucas' preferred, vocalized order: I through VI. Honestly, this will only be the second time (in a long time) I've ever sat down with the saga from Gungans to Ewoks. I'm actually feeling pretty good about it.
I'm stealing that.

My younger sister and I (with fashionably late appearances from Dad) watched 1-6 recently, her first time. She knew Vader and "I am your father" through cultural osmosis, but didn't know Anakin is Vader. The scene where he gets his new name absolutely blew her mind. Saw all the gears turning in her head as the mental connection was made. She thought Anakin was going to team up with Mace to kill Palpatine. The rest of the movie was cruel yet addictive entertainment for her. So anecdotally, I'd absolutely recommend showing newcomers chronological order. She got very attached to Anakin's story and watching him be destroyed, and destroy everyone around him is EXTREMELY compelling and surprising.
Her ratings: 7/10, 8/10, 10/10, 5/10, 8/10, 7.5/10. I can't fault her too much for her lukewarm reception to ANH. The brisk "potential one-off" feeling is baked into that movie, as was intended if Lucas couldn't make any more. It's a bit of a comedown coming hot off ROTS. In the context of the saga, it's simply an introduction to the new protags and state of the galaxy. Some might not want to take the relative breather it is, or watch it as a film unto itself. But there's still a sense of intrigue and dramatic irony you'll get like, ah, Vader is threatening his own daughter, he doesn't even know! Obi-Wan being cagey to Luke about his father, obviously. A lot of scenes have a new edge to them in chronological order, like the inherent humor of Vader shooting R2. And, intentionally or not, it avoids getting too pretentious or winky about its connections with previous films.
If you're curious, her favorite characters are Jar-Jar, Anakin, Yoda and Qui-Gon. My dad made note of all the Buddhist/stoic teachings.

ANH has an elegant simplicity to it that isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, especially in a cultural context where so many popular movies are so complex and interconnected. ANH will feel like a stereotypical blockbuster in contrast.

Am I a cranky old man or does that kid need to stfu? Also, i watched it with a friend who had the same information about Vader and Anakin being the father, but never made the connection. So i kniw how possible this is. Heck, I even thought Palpatine was going to turn to the dark side in ROTS.

stampidhd280proNot Star Wars but it's pretty much what this forum is about. So should Indiana Jones be watched in release order or chronological? (TOD to TDOD)

Don't really see why that's an issue. Indy was always something of an empiricist and a skeptic, so he only believes until he experiences it

Don't really see why that's an issue. Indy was always something of an empiricist and a skeptic, so he only believes until he experiences it That, and it's also simply the films from one to the next having a bit of fun by playing devil's advocate with the very idea: yes, Indy will sorta memory-hole any previous encounter with the unexplainable/supernatural on a default 'law of parsimony' that whatever folklore surrounding the current treasure is just that— "a ghost story," as such is what affords both him and the audience a humbling bit of wisdom by adventure's end. It's kinda meant to be cyclical that way. Just something you go with. Nitpickers however have always obsessed over it as some manner of plot-hole or lazy writing.

My biggest issue with watching Temple of Doom first would mostly be its tone. It was meant to be the dark sequel in the middle of a trilogy, like ESB. Also, the gag where Indy reaches for his pistol is already a reference to Raiders. The idea that it took place before Raiders isnt bad writing, but its also no reason to watch the movie out of release order.

Radioland Murders takes place in 1938 (41 BBY) Godfather, 1945-1955 (34-24 BBY) The Phantom Menace, 32 BBY ("1947") Tucker, 1950 (29 BBY) Attack of the Clones, 22 BBY ("1958") Godfather II, 1958-59 (21-20 BBY) Revenge of the Sith, 19 BBY ("1960") THX 1138, the 25th Century (Buck Rogers 1939/40 BBY) American Graffiti, 1962 (17 BBY) A New Hope, 0 ("1979") More American Graffiti, New Years Eve, 1964-1967 (released 1979) (15-12 BBY) The Empire Strikes Back, 3 ABY ("1982") Godfather III, 1979 (0) Return of the Jedi, 4 ABY (released 1983)
So you see, the radioland murders, american graffiti movies take place across approximately the same amount of time as the godfather movies (not counting flashbacks in ii and the end of iii), as well as Star Wars. "The Radioland Saga" 1938-1967 Godfather Saga 1940s-1979 Star Wars "1948-1983"
And unsurprisingly, the imaginary prequel dates of the 40s-50s match the serial, film noir, monster movie elements. Anyway, this has been a fun experiment so far, seeing how these movies represent the passage of real world time, and how the Star Wars prequels tried to portray that in a fictional universe. I think this viewing order is fun, effective, and there are real thematic parallels between the movies. And it has a cool name.

A few weeks ago I watched a video series on how Michael Corleone transitions from a good person to a bad person, and couldn't help but see parallels in Anakin.
