His name is Filoni. It's already a funny ethnic pun if you're inclined to take it that way. I remember Filoni defending his use of a sleazy Italian accent for certain characters in TCW. He has a sense of humor. And I'm sure he loves lasagna.

ArchdukeOfNaboo Someone renamed the post i never called him Felonius and i'm not an OT Fanboy I'm an OT/PT Fanboy
My mistake then, I saw you were the OP and assumed you named the thread. I think we should rename it simply "Dave Filoni" and advise for more neutral-sounding thread titles. They're not supposed to be polemics, that's what blogs are for. Threads are supposed to invite discussion and debate.

Thanks for the heads up, it was only meant to be temporary. To be honest, his ethnicity never crossed my mind, (or how that word only applies to Italians). Like with Thelonious Monk, it's an inevitable play on words. Based on the opening post and the sentiment going around, in an exaggerated way it poses the question: is he doing wrong or right for the Star Wars universe set up by Lucas? Sith Lords have serial/comic-booky names. I would hope people wouldn't see it as a lisence to be toxic, but I've been surprised before. Anyways, jokes can't withstand explanation, so, yeah.

I was rewatching some of the TCW featurettes I hadn't seen since the Blu-ray came out, and the ones about the Maul episodes take on a whole new meaning in light of the revelation that Maul was going to be the big bad in Lucas' ST.
Filoni makes it clear that it was Lucas' idea to bring him back and to develop him into a leader of the criminal gangs. Lucas was clearly building up to something much bigger with the character than just a petty rivalry with Obi-Wan. Revenge on Obi was Maul's first motivation, because his hatred of him kept him alive, but beyond that, he was building a criminal empire to rival Palpatine's. And now we know that he would have assumed control of the galaxy post-Return of the Jedi.
In that featurette, Filoni says this:
This could be referring just to what was going to happen later in TCW, if Lucas kept his cards close to his chest about the ST. But I think Filoni might have known that Lucas was planning to feature Maul in the ST. Whether he knew or not is up for debate, but I still think Filoni essentially betrayed Lucas' vision with the way he handled Maul in Rebels. Of course, it was out of Filoni's hands if Maul was to be used in the Disney ST, but the way Maul was portrayed in Rebels is not how Lucas developed him in TCW. Where did his criminal connections go? His underworld empire? None of that is in Rebels. In TCW, Maul says something like "The vision has expanded" when he's building his empire. But suddenly in Rebels, all Maul cares about is killing Obi-Wan. The character was regressed to an earlier, less developed state.

Well, and the idea of alternate timelines was kind of introduced in Rebels, wasn't it?

Well, in the Solo movie, Maul is still in control of his criminal empire. I think if the Solo movies continued, Q'ira would have overthrown him and taken control. That is why he is in exile when we meet him in Rebels. So, clearly, under Disney, the decision was made by someone at some point not to make him the ST villain. Was it Filoni or someone else? Who knows?

Patently absurd. I personally asked Filoni what his favorite EU novels were back in 2008. He said they were Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter and The Approaching Storm. Furthermore, Star Wars is not bound to EU, or even pre-existing notions of cannonical events, it evolves over time. It's fiction. As George taught him, in Star Wars, retcons are your friend.

You beat me to it. Filoni's premotion is long overdue.
What I'd like going forward is a few one-off films, looking at different aspects of the mythology, as Rogue One did. I am tired of these series, which are so short, stunted and diluted at times, they should really have been movies.
I don't know how Lucasfilm can ever hope to match the anticipation for a new trilogy as we got in TFA in 2015. The public were craving for new stories, there'd been no new live action Star Wars for ten years, and many fans and critics returned eager for justice on what they perceived to be the wrongs of the PT. There was an enormous amount of goodwill toward the new Lucasfilm regime under Disney control, strengthened by the (then) positive reception of the first sequel. But that's all lost now. Not only was TLJ divisive, TROS became the first final instalment of a trilogy to be panned by fans and critics alike - it was a crash landing in a film series that had always ended on a high. So no more trilogies.
Is Star Wars even worth continuing? Can we not simply appreciate what's done and dusted, as with Tolkien's works of literature? With all these cut-backs Disney is now making, I don't know how unwanted trite like Book of Bubba Fett is going to continue to be made.
Less is more. A solid animated series and the odd one-off film are what I would go with, with Filoni overseeing everything creatively (ditch the "story group" committee). Nevertheless, I am still tempted to see the wrongs of TROS addressed with an Episode X.

My apathy for current Star Wars is now carbonized. No, more than that: a multi-dimensional collapse of seemingly infinite indifferences down to the smallest subatomic scale—quarks, preons... a cosmic crunch of not giving a shit. Haven't bothered with a single episode of Ashoka, for instance. As the Filoniverse is not one that ever drew me in, having only a cursory knowledge of its heroes & lore, the news of his custodial promotion doesn't particularly strike me one way or another. I assume he'll keep up a professional standard at continuing content for an already devoted viewership, and good on him for furthering his career. Yet given our modern corporate-media landscape I simply cannot foresee any realistic course over the next 5 to 10 years that'll do anything other than hold the franchise's current median or steer it even further into disposable triviality (if such is even possible).

Really, the way I cope with the whole concept of what's happening to Star Wars, is that starting with TCW, Star Wars went from a movie franchise to a TV franchise. It was flagship Star Wars, but it was more the Filoniverse. Now, I like the Filoniverse, but I don't love it yet. It always feels like it's going somewhere, but it never really does. Now it leads us through time and space to - the Seige of Syracu- I mean, Admiral Thrawn and the Witch Cult from The Courtship of Princess Leia? I didn't watch the last two episodes of Andor, Ahsoka, too long and boring. And Mandalorian, I didn't feel like that story was going anywhere either. But it's a TV franchise now, and I'm OK with that. Just meant to go on and on like Days of Our Lives. Rogue One, SOLO, and the sequels are all part of its own section in my head, and it's very much a secondary interest. I still enjoy a few moments here and there, like Bill Burr in Mando, or the Slave One horizontally hovering face to face with the Sarlacc pit, young Princess Leia, and Hayden's depiction of Darth Vader. But at this point, I'm watching these much less for the story, than before, wherever it continues to Expand.

To an extent I already have: Andor, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Mandalorian seasons 1, 2 and 3...
I understand the show in question is not entirely without it's own distinct details and trajectory; a distinction but not necessarily a larger, truer difference. It's Disney+ tele-Star-Wars as a whole that has by this point left me with some real burnout. Had Ashoka premiered earlier on I may have given it my time. Even now, if I were to task myself to sit down and watch it I doubt I would come away loathing it. The curiosity, the enthusiasm to continue settling for such a standard, however has since filed for divorced.
Star Wars and I are now living separately. She got the house and the kids, I got the dog and the blender.
Yet don't count out the likelihood that I may eventually come down with the flu or get shit-faced drunk and binge the series in a semi-state of delirium.

Filoni is chief creative like Theodin was king of Rohan.
But yeah, with this glut of continuously flowing new content, do people even care about the movies anymore? Is the lore Lucas set up still relevant? Seems people have just picked what they like and don't care about the rest. Whether it 'fits' or not. With all these shows to watch, do they even have time for the movies?
Disney's over saturation seems to be causing a malaise, a burnout, and a tuning out of the other parts of SW that don't tickle each particular person's pleasure spots in their brain.
