My usual tiny list of new movies I've seen this year.
Dune (on an airplane) Batman (on an airplane) Jan Žižka aka Medieval (first movie I've seen in a theatre since Joker in 2019)
I want to see Banshees of Inisherin and Weird but they're not in Czech Republic yet.

I just finished watching Del Toro's Pinocchio. That is a strong contender to top my Best Movies list for 2022!

Note, as with all my lists, they're in no particular order.
But Catan, I still haven't played it but my friends love it. I'm curious to try it sometime.
What is Hnefatafl? Sounds like something native to your area.

Sounds like something native to your area. It's a game the Vikings invented- kind of a precursor to chess, if it makes sense. I bought it when I visited Oslo at the Viking Ship Museum there

The horror genre is as popular & plentiful now as it's likely ever been and moreover has been averaging as the most profitable at the box office in the past few years. Many would even argue that we've been enjoying a new golden age or renaissance of chic-sophisticated horror filmmaking. And yet, you're correct in that I personally, at least, haven't been impressed. I don't care about any of the trendiest titles from Blumhouse or A24, most of which I find rote or pretentious. Frankly, I think the genre has since been flattened out and overcooked with too much commercialist self-awareness and indie-pop affectation, or with, say, The Conjuring and it's ilk, is just kinda drab and boring.
As for Scream, I remember the first one being...cute. Effectively hip, I suppose. It just didn't stay with me enough to follow the sequels. And I never took to torture-porn stuff that was the Saw franchise.

No Psycho? You disappoint me Ings Yeah, they're plenty of celebrated classics or fandom favorites that wouldn't make my cut: Psycho, Carrie, Rosemary's Baby, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre... the list goes on. Not even Halloween made my selection, which includes three other Carpenter entries! Lots of good movies in their own right but, hey, I gotta serve my own whimsies first and foremost.

And some are too bleak and depressing for my taste

I'm a big pussy when it comes to horror movies. Evil Dead 2 probably made me laugh harder than any other movie though.

I also appreciate your Lynchian proclivity, nor did I ever expect to see Viy making its way aboard anyone's list; good on you for surprising me with that one.

Sorry for the late response, EJC. Your list, however, surprises me not. Naturally your picks will hail almost entirely from the 1940s to the end of the '60s-ish studio heydays.
20. The Comancheros 19. The Outlaw Josey Wales
18. Meek's Cutoff 17. Rancho Notorious 16. The Outlaw
15. Vera Cruz 14. The Mountain Men
13. The Long Riders 12. Red Sun
11. The Westerner
10. True Grit (2010)
09. The Professionals 08. Pale Rider
07. Wild Bill
06. Quigley Down Under
05. Wagon Master 04. Tombstone
03. Rio Bravo 02. Shane
01. Red River
Special goofball shout-out to The Valley Of Gwangi

Wagon Master! Ford's personal favorite in terms of form! Reference to that film was one of the main takeaways from a thick biography of the legendary director I read 15 years ago. Nice!
