I’ve yet to see Ran
The Bad Sleep Well is a bit too depressing for my liking, but the others are quite great.

Ran is rather ambiguous. It may seem depressing on the surface, but I feel like there is more going on there. Some would call it Kurosawa in his nihilistic phase, and he is certainly dealing with the problem of nihilism in that movie, but somehow I feel like something more shines through the nihilism.

'Stimpy's Invention' and 'Marooned' in particular end on the greatest notes ever committed to Saturday morning cartoon output. That 1st-2nd season stretch of the show defined my preadolescent brain in a manner that remains permanent to this day. It's why I still laugh out loud during inappropriate moments both private and social.
For the record I prefer The Hidden Fortress over Seven Samurai, even if only just. I'd Top 10 Kurosawa thusly: 10. Dreams
09. Kagemusha 08. Ran 07. The Bad Sleep Well
06. I Live in Fear
05. Dersu Uzala 04. Throne of Blood
03. High and Low
02. Seven Samurai
01. The Hidden Fortress
And, honestly, my love for The Hidden Fortress has virtually nothing to do with its longstanding association with Star Wars; I really couldn't care less from that perspective. I just think it's the perfect folk-adventure movie and a perfect alchemy of Kurosawa's deep poise and artistic instincts nevertheless subordinate compos mentis to the aim of a mainstream crowd-pleaser. It's a fun movie, in short.
I noticed no Rashomon, Yojimbo or Ikuru. What are your thoughts on those'ns? Rashomon nearly made my lists but by this point I sorta feel about it the same way I do with John Carpenter's original Halloween in that I only ever engage both films clinically as templates and film-study exercises over something where I get lost in the story. Likewise does Ikuru exists for me in a more strictly academic state given its themes on post-war Japanese anxieties while Yojimbo (and Sanjuro both) is Kurosawa merely dabbling in 'gunfighter' movies, at least when compared to his other Jidaigeki works that mix it up with Shakespeare, epic war or folk adventure.
Anyways...
I just finished a two week sit-down with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in its entirety. It's a bit of a chore, like plowing your way through an entire TV series run primarily for completion's sake. I'm almost embarrassed for having indulged such a tonnage of mediocrity and for my part I definitely had to temper my standards/sophistications a bit in order to best enjoy the franchise's one-size-fits-all commercial appeal. Still, there are some playfully satisfying aspects. So here's my ranking of the whole affair:
26. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
25. Black Panther 24. Eternals
23. Captain Marvel 22. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
21. Guardians of the Galaxy
20. Ant-Man 19. The Avengers
18. Thor 17. Iron Man 16. The Incredible Hulk
15. Thor: The Dark World 14. Spider-Man: Far From Home 13. Spider-Man: Homecoming 12. Spider-Man: No Way Home
11. Iron Man 3
10. Iron Man 2 09. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 08. Captain America: Civil War 07. Avengers: Age of Ultron 06. Ant-Man and the Wasp 05. Doctor Strange 04. Black Widow
The only ones that actually register for me:
03. Thor: Ragnarok
02. Avengers: Infinity War / Endgame 01. Captain America: The First Avenger
I really need to cleanse my palate of all this. I think tonight I'll revisit a gargantuan mess with diverging qualities from a different era of blockbuster absurdity—Waterworld.

When it comes to Marvel, I often walk away from their movies feeling conflicted because in most of their movies there is quite a lot to like but also a lot I hate. Therefore, there are very few movies in that entire collection that I feel like I can embrace wholeheartedly.

I too sometimes sense a bit of a masochist streak in Ingram . But I admire his ability to gird his loins and face the music. I'm more of a stubborn avoidant. Superhero movies (from this century) I've seen: X-Men (2000) Nolan's Batman trilogy one of the Thor movies (only because Natalie Portman) Wonder Woman (out of sheer morbid curiosity) Black Panther And I liked Waterworld. I'll have to see if I can find our discussion on it from long ago.

Respectable. Yet I feel no Ren & Stimpy favorites list is quite complete without the following four prerequisites: 'Stimpy's Invention' and 'Marooned' in particular end on the greatest notes ever committed to Saturday morning cartoon output. That 1st-2nd season stretch of the show defined my preadolescent brain in a manner that remains permanent to this day. It's why I still laugh out loud during inappropriate moments both private and social. Ah yes, the classics, the flagship episodes. They're like the ESBs of Ren & Stimpy. Though they're genius and a sight to be seen of course, I left them out because they're givens. I thought I'd take the time to honor some unsung gems. Also the space episodes don't have unique painting title cards. I really wanted to include Morooned, but left it out soley for that reason. I always thought it was a shame how much it got overshadowed by Space Madness. And yes, those first two seasons defined my adolescent brain. Man, what a time!

And despite playing only up until the mid-decade, for more holistic reasons (including personal spirit animals), if I were to assemble a list then it would certainly include John 'No-Fucks-Given' Kruk.
“I ain’t an athlete, lady. I’m a baseball player.”

Ha, yes I liked Will Clark, he was pretty much the quintessential, consummate baseball player. But I figured Kirby + 15 more was enough of a list and Will the Thrill barely missed the cut. I think he wasn't one of my top favorites because I had friends who had him as their favorite and figured he had enough love Clark is like Griffey jr. to me, I like them, sure, but didn't exactly follow them closely. Same with Nolan, he's was... too good. I felt like he didn't need any more fans, haha. And I think I didn't like his Texan attitude, haha, (Clemens took it to a whole other level, though). But yeah, there were others I could keep adding to my list like Will Clark, Tim Raines, Elliis Burks, Roberto Alomar, Pudge Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez, he won't let me Mo Vaughn... Ahh, John Kruk, the Sam Gamgee of MLB, with the attitude of Gimli. So did you have a glorious John Kruk mullet?

I still haven't seen everything from 2021. And I barely watched anything new in 2022. If I join in the list-making fun, I'm gonna have a tiny list.

If I join in the list-making fun, I'm gonna have a tiny list. It's best not to share that fact with others. Ingram are we getting the end of year list from yours truly? I guess, maybe. I dunno. Probably, of some sort.
