Movies obsessed with sound and speed, early 2000s CGI/digital magic, action prioritized over dialogue, sound and music as dialogue, wuxia, live-action cartoonery, pure cinema, etc etc etc...
For your consideration, Electric Dragon 80.000 V (2001) from director Sogo Ishii.
The full movie's on YT in decent quality, english subbed, and probably the only way to watch it without torrenting or shelling out a cool hundred for a DVD.

Great idea for a thread, jendy ! I should explore your recommendation further. Never heard of it before. I just wanna grab my Kodak camera here: Movies obsessed with sound and speed, early 2000s CGI/digital magic, action prioritized over dialogue, sound and music as dialogue, wuxia, live-action cartoonery, pure cinema, etc etc etc... *SNAP* A really nifty description of the PT and a special time in cinema. Thanks for that.

Really interesting thread. I'd love to know any films similar to the prequels. I think Disney's Treasure Planet mirrors the prequels. It was one of the first animated films to mix in lots of CGI with hand drawn animation. It has similarly imaginative alien worlds and inhabitants. I haven't seen the film in a long time, so I don't remember all the details, but that's the feeling I remember getting from it. I always thought that the main character, Jimmy Hawkins, mirrors Anakin as an adolescent trouble maker and racer that dreams of adventure. They even look alike, with similar hair. Both Treasure Planet and Attack of the Clones came out in 2002. There is also the cyborg John Silver, with a robot arm not unlike Vader's. The ships in Treasure Planet even use solar sails like Dooku's ship in AotC.

Seeker, it's funny you mentioned Valerian in another thread. My blurb after seeing it was "AotC for Rihanna fans."
Lots of moral dilemmas and cgi.
It was pretty good, but a little too Hollywood.

I was meaning to see it in theaters, but didn't get around to it for whatever reason. The CGI looks amazing, it must have looked great on the big screen. I have owned it on Blu-ray almost since it came out, but never took the initiative to watch it. I might finally see it tonight. Your blurb has got me VERY excited. AotC is the most beautiful Star Wars film, and I could tell from the trailers that the color palette and worlds were similar.

Dooku and the Separatists plotting together to take over the Republic reminds me a lot of the setup from a Doctor Who story, 1965's The Daleks' Masterplan, in which Mavic Chen, supposed Guardian of the Solar System, gathers together a host of alien races to plot against the galaxy: Sure, a whole bunch of aliens gathered together isn't the most original premise, but there are some other similarities that jump out. Obi-Wan observing the conference from above is similar to the Doctor, in disguise, eavesdropping on the evil plans. The same plans that involve a mysterious superweapon (Death Star or the Time Destructor). Mavic Chen is a very Dooku-like figure, selling out the galaxy for pure power. Even the Daleks as the true masterminds of the whole plan fit in nicely with Sidious, especially at the climax the story when they eventually have all the alien delegates wiped out, including a shocked and betrayed Chen. Now I'm in no way suggesting that this episode was any influence on Lucas, despite their similar pulpy sci-fi DNA. The episodes aired in the UK only once, were only sold to one country (Australia), and now only 25% of the serial survives in the archives, so the odds of Lucas catching an episode are slim to none. Still, it's nice to see a more traditional example of space opera done about 40 years before Star Wars homaged these same tropes.

I've always enjoyed that moment in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Belloq tempts Indy to look inside the Ark. He might of well have said, "Have you ever heard the Tragedy of the Darth Plagueis the Wise?"
Raiders and The Prequels obviously got their DNA from the same daddy.

Valerian definitely belongs in the category of films that share DNA with the prequels. I too would say it's pretty good. Visually stunning, but the story was a bit all over the place. Not nearly as cohesive a vision as the prequels. It borrows from the prequels, most notably in its visual style, as this article illuminates: www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/valerian-city-a-thousand-planets-borrows-star-wars-prequels-1023479/Some SPOILERS for Valerian, if you haven't seen it. The protagonist, Valerian, is a similar romantic brooding hero as Anakin, and his relationship with Laureline mirrors that of Anakin with Padmé, especially in AotC. There is an under water chase involving three giant fish creatures, and a chase through a city planet. A peaceful race is caught in a galactic war, like the Gungans, Wookiees and Ewoks. Valerian frees a person from a pimp-like owner, similar to Qui-Gon freeing Anakin from Watto. The Dogan Daguis are similar in looks to both Watto and Jar Jar, and similar in personality to the latter. There is a desert planet called Kirian, and Alpha, the city of a thousand planets, is obviously like Coruscant.

I loved Valerian precisely because, like Attack of the Clones, the protagonist goes on an adventure with his girlfriend. I liked Aquaman for the same reason.

It's a fun premise, the characters finding their love on the road. Aquaman actually has some similarity to the prequels, with lots of great CGI effects. The big battle at the end reminded me of Star Wars and LotR, and the Atlantean soldiers looked like clone/stormtroopers.

I liked Valerian, too. It's bold, colourful and all over the top. Perhaps a little too over the top. But so much better than the typical Hollywood bullshit. Definitely has AOTC vibes all over it.
I didn't really like Aquaman that much, however. It's a decent movie, but I felt the story was bland and the effects looked worse than what Lucas did 20+ years ago. Happy to see Temuera Morrison in another big movie, though!

I have a thread on this in the Other board, but I have to include Brian De Palma's 1974 film Phantom of the Paradise. It's an absurdist, oddball, comedy musical, but what's intrigued me for so long is that it's basically the story of Anakin and Palpatine... long before even ANH. Interesting to keep in mind De Palma is not only a friend of Lucas' but also helped write the opening crawl for ANH.

I'm going to have to check Phantom of the Paradise out. Sounds delightful. The poster alone has me imagining a musical version of ROTS where Anakin sells his soul for rock n' roll. Hahaha. Instead of a lightsaber duel, Anakin and Obi-Wan would have a guitar battle.

While watching Dennis the Menace (1993) it occurred to me that maybe George was making a tribute to these great family movies that came out in the 90s. Like Home Alone 2, or 1994's The Little Rascals, which even includes a race. Come to think of it, the only thing missing from Episode I is a Donald Trump cameo.
Anakin is a lot like Dennis in that he causes a lot of trouble and saves the day, seemingly on accident. Oh and the cute blonde little boy thing.

I think the big Disney animated flicks of the decade had an influence, too -- especially where the romantic "boy meets girl" story of Anakin and Padme is concerned.

One of my all-time favorite movies. And though it doesn't exactly, necessarily have Prequel DNA per se, it is the alternate universe candidate I think of when people say "Episode I should've just been Obi-Wan finding Anakin, no Qui-Gon." This film could serve that purpose in some ways. It's definitely fun to think of while watching it. P.S. I went as Six-String Samurai for Halloween in 2008.
