"The Devil" appears to both Anakin and Luke at the beginning of their journeys. The real devil will end up being an old man.

Look at the design of these two areas and the arrangement of characters. I noticed it many years ago. There's also a striking relationship between the central seated figures. The alien on the bridge has an optical and vocal apparatus affixed crudely to its face. It suggests what the Trade Federation wants to do with the leader of the Renaissance planet: bend her to their will by taking over what she sees and what she says in an alike and rather industrially aggressive fashion. There are clear shades of Anakin's fate as well. Also, the center figure on the spaceship bridge has a line in the film and, after noticing the visual connection between these two shots, it seemed to me as if the line reading may have been performed by Natalie Portman herself. The performance of the line has the quality of a familiar but not-so-seasoned female voice actor.

This is getting out of hand. Now there are *two* of them. You might like to take a gander at the following Tumblr post -- a collection of columns and stick-forms in Episode II (double pillars again): starwarsverses.tumblr.com/post/38617505613/attack-of-the-kl%C5%8DnesEven the subtitle ATTACK OF THE CLONES means... ATTACHMENT OF THE STICKS. "You don't want to sell me death sticks." " Attachment is forbidden. Possession is forbidden." Or, indeed... STICKINESS OF THE STICKS. Because just as a "twig, spray, slip" (as embedded in the word "clone") is also a stick or stake, so an "estache" (or "stakka") is a stake or a stick (as embedded in the word "attack"). And isn't that basically how you "kill" the "mysterious Count Dooku" in most of his other movie roles -- i.e., a stake/stick through a heart? Indeed, as Anakin finds, much to his frustration, sorrow, and shame... death sticks. But Palpatine tells him death can unstick (in Episode III -- Anakin in an even "stickier" situation). Only, nope, it sticks again! Until it sort of doesn't (Force Ghosts, Sequel Trilogies, Resurrection Subplots). I've probably put this in the wrong thread. But I'm nutty about AOTC (a Lucasian "COAT" of arms/arm choppings if ever there was one), not to mention a little tipsy over TROS, a SORT-ed version of ROTS ( fixed!), so please forgive me.

Indeed. Always two there are... Here is Luke between two moisture vaporators.

Just a couple more: Centering the myth and priming the resurrection (from father to son): Left-Aligned: Right-Aligned: And that's our hero of the hour: Luke Skywalker. Star Wars, y'all.

Anakin taking after an ancient Jedi master. Okay, pilfering your frames, here are two other matches: Anakin-Yoda: As wise as Master Yoda...And this one (oh, no, more pillars!) in AOTC: Obi-Wan confidently striding ahead to see Yoda and the Younglings in a warm and welcoming Jedi Temple: Obi-Wan and Yoda confronting the fallen bodies of the Younglings in a bleak and battle-scarred Jedi Temple: How much darker and gloomier ROTS looks and feels compared to the colourful and light-stained AOTC. Also note something interesting about the statues. In the AOTC frame, the ball is being comfortably suspended above an open palm; in the ROTS frame, the Jedi Master is reaching up with digits extended, as if trying to keep the ball aloft -- or making a gesture of "Don't shoot!"

Cryogenic Very interesting. I didn't remember that statue in AotC. There is a clear progression with the statues. In the second statue, it almost looks like the ball is out of his reach. Perhaps a visual metaphor for the Jedi having lost their way during the war, or that they now must hold to their principles more than ever. This statue in Palpatine's apartment resembles a cloaked figure. I remember someone speculated that it's...

And yes, it functions very well as a compelling visual metaphor on those levels.

Just to add one more to the pillar collection... There are so many! The pillars could be said to represent "sticks" holding up the world/sky (including the ideological systems the characters inhabit and maintain), or oversized lightsaber hilts, or rolled-up scrolls -- and their ubiquitous presence, combined with their destruction, could symbolise the end of an entire World Order, or the cyclical/shattering nature of violence (even lightsabers sometimes get destroyed), or the impossibility of total knowledge, etc. Plus, of course, since my focus has been on double pillars (i.e., pillars that are literal clones or look pseudo-similar to one another as a pair), they also embody the ever-present concept of duality, which is thoroughly emblazoned in the Star Wars Saga (Republic/Empire, Jedi/Sith, Light/Dark, Master/Apprentice, Public/Private, Rebellion/Conformity, Heart/Duty, Greed/Selflessness, Earth/Sky, The Living Force/The Cosmic Force, etc.). Some more riffs building on the Anakin frame from earlier: Mastery Of The Sphere Dual Destruction: Crashing Down: Dust Clouds: Close Pass: Into The Sky:
