all these historical epics Well here now is a trailer for the granddaddy of historical epics, with Ridley Scott behind it. And with a new **minor spoiler** emperor... that of Anthony 's country. You couldn't possibly find better source material, you couldn't possibly find a more fitting actor at the zenith of his career, and yet I can think of so many ways this could be blown up (if you'll excuse the pun). Scott's recent outings do not inspire a lot of confidence, he's become a Transformers-style director, where it is spectacle over soul or style before substance. I hope it's good, I'd like to be proven wrong, but this trailer does not lend itself to optimism. It would appear the main character will be subordinate to a gore cannon extravaganza. That would be a terrible waste. Is Phoenix only calling in for a big payday like Ford in Indie 5? He could well be.

They could have gone for a French actor; probably a better fit than Phoenix.
I mean, it’s not like France doesn’t have a vibrant film industry that goes back to the origins of the medium

Any one chapter in Napoleon's life would make for a better dramatization than the generalized career-long biopic but these types of mainstream productions cater to highlight reels and ticked boxes, less the attention-span of mainstream audiences is lost, as only presumed by Hollywood writers/execs. It's a bad trailer for starters, as all modern trailers are... all that constant hammering bullshit with some neo-pop song remix thrown in and the obligatory cuts to prophetic dialogue. The whole thing also looks boringly digital with stock 'period set' digital color-grading ubiquitous across every other streaming drama set 80 years or longer into the past. And if the selling point of Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role is that he's going to walk through every single scene with the same blank "stoic" expression then I guess said trailer is at least being honest.
Trailers tend to be monotonous that way no matter the quality of the film, however. I've actually favored Scott's latter streak from 2017 onward, with his cold calculating style bringing a certain sense of mordant wit to the narrative proceedings in All the Money in the World, Alien: Covenant, The Last Duel (his sharpest period epic since Gladiator, me personally) and House of Gucci. Hopefully such quality will succeed here despite the banal marketing.

Tom Holland (the historian, not the actor) made the point that a movie of his life would last like seven days-
Apparently the theatrical version will run for 2 hours and 38 minutes while the version available on Apple TV will be 4 hours. Personally I am not a fan of Napoleon himself but I like historical epics so I may as well see it, even if the trailer was less than impressive

Oh, in that case you simply do the whole thing in French. A heavy French accent in English would ruin the thing faster that could blink. En française wouldn't be so bad, look at how well Downfall covers the end of the Third Reich, and it's in the native German. The problem lies in convincing an Anglophone audience to watch it.
I enjoy French dramas whenever I see them; I'm all for it. Filming in a range of languages (French, English, German and Russian) would also be fun.
Don't get your history from these films though. The books are more exciting!

Viewers will have to be careful not to assume that Ridley is rehashing the costume design of his earlier film. The likelihood is that Commodus's appearance in Gladiator was influenced by those royal paintings from the Napoleonic era. There are so many open questions about Ancient Rome that the inspiration for filling gaps often comes from later periods. So we've come full circle, if you will.
Commodus was a deranged, unstable individual, entirely unsuitable for office. They could have actually hammed it up further if they'd wanted to be more true to the real emperor. Napoleon was an infinitely more capable operator, having worked his way up from relative obscurity in Corsica, so you'll be in for a disappointment if you expect this to be Commodus Part II.
I agree entirely eljedicolombiano - there's no way you can boil down such a long, jam-packed career into 2 and a half hour film, and the same can be said for the complicated series of alliances and power struggles of the era, where Austria (a country now fallen to the indignity of being confused with Australia) is a big player. Isn't the trend in biopic these days to pick an important episode and zone in from there? Wasn't Spielberg's one on Lincoln like that?
Apparently Spielberg has been working on a HBO series based on Napoelon's career. That may well be of more promise, given the sheer amount of time that Television is able to grant a subject matter. The best way to portray the period, however, in my view, would not be true the eyes of the General, but rather in a Band of Brothers style manner, following a group of French soldiers.
What biopics have people here enjoyed in recent times? If any.
Ingram You'll have to forgive me for me for being allergic to the play-acting and attention-seeking buffoonery that is the modern fashion industry. "House of Gucci" conjures up Gavin Newsom vibes, and life is much too short for that.
I started to sour on Scott after seeing The Counselor, an experience that left me disorientated leaving the cinema - one of those "WTF did I just watch" moments forever edged into my consciousness.

Haha, no I have enough familiarity with Napolean to not expect Commodus Part II, I merely enjoy this one similarity that Commodus and Napoleon share, and the fact it is the same actor and director.

I wouldn't suggest there was much tragedy to Commodus either. He was born with a silver spoon up his ass, and helped wobble the empire which, in another 30 odd years, would descent into chaos. There wasn't much likeable about him, one the worst emperors without question.
Napoleon, however, has tragedy written all over him. He's actually not that unlike Anakin, when one thinks of it. Both happen to be supremely gifted at their warrior profession, are charismatic leaders, engage in questionable romances, but are hampered by a serious bout of self-centredness, which becomes all consuming to the point of paranoia, chronic narcissism, falling out with close ones, and derailing their entire polities. Both heavily beloved by their publics. Oh, and they're also complicit in coups
If you tell someone you're fascinated by Anakin, you tend to get the same reaction if you tell them you you feel likewise about the Frenchman.

If you REALLY wanna get a rise out of people, tell them you want a romance like Anakin and Padme.

I remembered some more. Cable Guy, of course. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Survivors with Robin Williams, Drop Dead Fred, House Guest. And as I mentioned with Second City, John Candy's bread & butter was this type of comedy, Planes, Trains & Automobiles and The Great Outdoors come to mind first. And I asked at the facebook group Incredibly Strange Films, which I recommend joining, and got: To Sleep With Anger Pacific Heights Dark Backwards D-Train, and Election (both Jack Black) Poison Ivy Funny Games Happiness Duplex The Ref Madhouse She-Devil Most of these I'd never heard of but I looked them up and they sound good. I received another suggestion that sounds too good to ignore, Midnight Run starring Grodin and De Niro. Also, I can't believe I didn't mention After Hours by Scorcese. You've seen that right? If not, I would put it high on your to watch list.

I love Midnight Run. After Hours has an amazing, very 80s poster. It's been catching my eye on movie apps. I guess I'll have to check it out soon.

Hahaha, touché! That's surely the most taboo, most off-limits aspect of the entire PT in Star Wars discussion today. And has been for some time, if we're being truthful. While praising Anakin, Dooku, the subplots of Episode II, and so many other areas have become respectable to some degree, to reality is that you will all too often run into pushback whenever you suggest a revision to the common fan perspective (ie embarrassment, cringe etc) on the Anakin-Padmé storyline.

After Hours is one of the most unique films I have ever seen. The 4K debuted on July 11th, I will be getting my copy maybe when I am on vacation or shortly thereafter so that I can revisit this gem.
As for Anakin and Padme, it is understandable that their's is a taboo relationship, after all, you wouldn't want to date someone who goes full fascist like Anakin does. But people seem to overlook the more positive aspects of their relationship, that is for sure.

No, you're misunderstanding me there. The taboo I refer to is us, the audience, praising the romantic storyline or suggesting Lucas did well on any aspect of it. Even amongst online prequelist communities like "Prequel Memes", they constantly bemoan the romance, so in that sense our forum gains its selling point in embracing, unconditionally, the entire Prequel Trilogy. While we way not be alone now, we certainly were when this place began in 2017 (as a continuation of earlier unapologetic PT communities).
A taboo within a taboo.... Prequelception

Haha yes, okay. I guess we can say Anidala is taboo in multiple ways. The only place online I remember matching Naberrie Fields for its unapologetic Prequel love is The Prequel Appreciation Society.
