Hello there!
How many of you would be interesting in a starting a weekly film club? A movie would be chosen each week - ideally to be watched on a particular evening, or over a weekend - and we'd then discuss it in a dedicated forum in the days afterwards. Unfortunately Star Wars doesn't count!
What are your DVD, Blu-ray or even VHS collections like? Are you subscribed to any pay TV or online film subscription services? In the case of the latter, you'll find the website JustWatch really helpful for figuring out which movie is on an increasingly segmented streaming marketplace. We should work towards picking films available to the most of us.
Let me know your thoughts.

I'm interested. No preference on streaming services or anything.

This sounds like a cool idea! Count me in. I don't have a subscription to anything, but I'd be happy to get one going soon. Especially for the purposes of this suggestion. I was on the cusp of signing up to Netflix. There's already a few shows I'd like to start watching. As soon as I dive in, I'll never leave my computer desk! Also -- in answer to your other questions: I have a modest DVD collection. No Blu-rays, unfortunately. I got rid of my VHS tapes a long time ago. Streaming, I guess, is the way forward. I'm sure we can come to a suitable arrangement that works for all of us. I sound like a Kaminoan.

Please excuse my now-deceased stepfather also. He put all my tapes in an outdoor shed and they rotted. I had no choice but to throw them away. A few survived -- including my Episode I VHS tape. So there's that. Blu-rays are beyond my budget. Despite the fact I introduced HD video technology to some of my friends way before most people had seen any HD footage for themselves (way back in 2004). I was even able to sell TVs, so I was told, on the strength of the clips I showed them. A friend's brother worked in sales and he shifted a number of television screens, my friend told me, based on those same clips. Am I allowed back at the table?

Anyways, ArchdukeOfNaboo, my library is pretty healthy. I'm stocked well enough, I could go from indie-arthouse to niche-schlock, depending on everyone's poison.

I like what I hear. Blu-rays are beyond my budget. Don't ye have car boot sales over in England?

And in how many parsecs? I have about 500 movies... I am intrigued.
@everyone Ok, I'm thinking the choice of film each week will be one member's decision, and so everyone will eventually get their turn (unless somebody wants to be greedy). In theory, I'd like you to pick absolutely anything - surprise me with depths of your Kafkaesque film noirs - but practically-speaking, we will probably be severely limited. The film choices are much weaker with Netflix for European peasants like Cryo and I, but that service may yet be our best bet. Again, JustWatch will guide us carefully (they have versions for multiple countries: they are good globalists).
Oh, and I should add: There is the opportunity of renting movies individually on places like on iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft, Sky, Rakuten for 3, 4 or 5 £/$/€, depending on whether you want HD (not essential, but I reserve the right to later insist) and how new it is. The option to "buy" also exists, but as it is purely digital software, I would instead advice you to hold your cash for your glorious physical collections.
At a glance, spending 5 bucks on a film each week might seem an expensive pursuit, but think about how much you already spend on Coffee outdoors that you could easily be doing at home. If it leads to a great experience, that is getting this film club all fired-up, then I say it's worth it (or rather: you're worth it).
Now to echo the Queen of my planet: I will not condone a action of movie piracy.

Lost. Or because someone erased them from the archive memory. Speaking of Episode II, I like how it's seen here inked in barely discernible black. I don't know why. I just do. And speaking of Arnold, what are your thoughts on Red Heat? ...given your nationality and all.

Lost. Or because someone erased them from the archive memory. I can remember some. The Mask Raw Deal
Jingle All The Way Stuart Little Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Rambo III
The Matrix Mr. Nice Guy Octopussy A View to a Kill License to Kill Die Another Day Daylight
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II All these movies were recorded from TV on VHS. Pirate VHS: True Lies Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
Many Tom & Jerry cartoons (I don't like them. They are all awful.) The Little Mermaid Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective Cinderella Sleeping Beauty Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (+ Happily Ever After) Robin Hood Peter Pan The Fox and the Hound
Also, I have two first Terminators on licensed VHS.
Speaking of Episode II, I like how it's seen here inked in barely discernible black. I don't know why. I just do. We were lazy. I didn't make the sticker.))
This VHS contains the second part of TESB and the whole ROTJ. By the way, there is "Yub Nub" instead of "Victory Celebration" in the ending. When I saw Special Edition on TV with Victory Celebration and Hayden, I was thrilled: "Wow, it's so beautiful."
And speaking of Arnold, what are your thoughts on Red Heat? ...given your nationality and all. We like it. It's very funny.

The film choices are much weaker with Netflix for European peasants like Cryo and I, but that service may yet be our best bet. Again, JustWatch will guide us carefully (they have versions for multiple countries: they are good globalists). So Netflix doesn't offer everything? I have a lot to learn about streaming. This sorta reminds me of the time I ordered Vincent Gallo's "The Brown Bunny" on Amazon, but I kept getting a message, periodically, informing me it still wasn't in stock, and would I like to keep waiting or cancel? Eventually, I get fed up, so I cancelled. Sometimes, it's amazing how hard it is to get a copy of a film, even when you're doing it legitimately! Yikes, my man. At that rate, I think I'd want to own the film outright. As I understand it, a Netflix subscription is something in the region of £10 or £15 per month, which seems reasonable given all the content you can watch in that month (right?). Having to pay £4 or £5 for a single movie seems like a rip-off in comparison.
Coffee outdoors? Who are these pseudo-intellectual hipsters you speak of; and what the hell are they doing outdoors, anyway? Grrgh! I go outside to take walks and photographs. That's all.
Seriously:
I'm actually trying to save for a new camera, so five bucks per week, on a new film, is actually something of an indulgence -- especially on top of a subscription to one or more streaming platforms. Maybe we can do that once in a while, but I have a limited budget and have to watch my money very carefully. Just putting that out there.

I need to calibrate my monitor (or rather: throw this piece of crap in a skip and get a new one). That tape is literally just blank to my eyes. I can only vaguely discern a tiny haze of grey on the left side. That's all. I copied the image into a paint program and dialled up the brightness. Okay, yeah, now I see it, very faintly. Like wow. Talk about contraband. I like the dramatic writing. I think I tended to write my VHS cassette labels in biro (ugh), rather small. Looking back, that was dumb. Bright, bold, permanent-marker lettering, in the style of "Don't you dare erase these little puppies" (is it a Russian thing?), makes a lot more sense. Arnie and Star Wars. Okay, Moonshield. We can be friends.

Moonshield I like your collection. I too have an old dusty collection of tapped TV programs (almost all cartoons) and films on VHS, although it was a team effort with my siblings. I used to constantly watch replays of Episodes IV-VI during the early 2000s, yet I don't think I ever tapped them if I recall correctly,
What do you think of our film club proposal? Do you have any ideas as to how we might make it workable?

My only means of watching movies for awhile will be Youtube. But don't let me slow you guys down. Go on without me.
With that said, they do have some good old films on there like La Jetee. *checks. Damn it's gone now.
If you do choose one I've seen I can talk about it.
I had hordes of taped shows, cartoons and movies on VHS. And yes, some even rotted in the shed. You could actually see the mold growing on the tape.
We used to talk about movies we'd seen on the TFN pm thread and Skype like crazy.

My only means of watching movies for awhile will be Youtube. But don't let me slow you guys down. Go on without me. The good ol' Tube. That's mostly what I'm stuck with. Move clips, music, podcasts, lecture series, and photography blogs. Plenty to keep me occupied. Yep. That happens all the time. It ain't easy finding whole films on there. They never last long. Right. It's a very obvious mold; or an acid excreted by the mold spores. Looks a bit like paint granules or table salt. Eats right through your tape. Lovely.

If we're gonna limit ourselves to full movies on youtube, we're gonna be watching some awesome B-movies and obscure oldies!
