I'm a lover of poetry, so I find the mentality of literalism to be so frustrating.

Looking back at all the drama that existed when the original trilogy was released on DVD, back in 2004, I just realized that Lucas only did three actual changes to the movies from their 1997 Special Editions: Updated Jabba CG model: Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor: Hayden Christensen as Anakin's Force spirit: Everything else were "invisible" fixes and TLC that is done to any restoration or remaster of a movie. And if we're going to count the 2011 and 2020 editions, the "changes" were even minor.

AlexrdSome have a problem with Clive Revill's Emperor being replaced by Ian McDiarmid

Yes. Some have a problem with everything. Some pretend that there's no logic behind the changes. The cavern of stupidity goes deep.

It's just some excerpts from the 1997 Special Edition featurette that was included in the VHS releases.

More whining about the SE!

More whining about the SE! This old hat. Are these people capable of a single ounce of original insight for criticism? By this point I've heard less parroting in a bird shop. It's fine, Vader's exclamation. The easiest thought experiment is to imagine it always having been there since the original theatrical release and onward through home video media, only to have a latter iteration SE remove said scream. The ensuing gripes would merely be the respective inverse, that Vader now robbed of his scream neuters his emotional turning point with but an oddly blank close-up, while others like myself would at least be able to appraise the choice for allowing a moment of internalization. Either version works, but the current one is at least merited per its symmetry with PT Anakin's similar hours. But why bother with such context when you can just pass-off a tired, intellectually stunted recyclable as some kinda fresh hot take. These are neither fans nor worthy critics of Lucas' Star Wars. They just serve a viral culture.

When I saw the ROTJ 4k scan in theaters recently, I appreciated more than ever how the CG additions combined harmoniously with the old practical ones. (Obviously a heavy amount of recompositing and touching up at play as well). Did not notice the "artificialness" of Sy Snootles anymore than I noticed the obviously puppety movements of the Rancor. You are looking for the wrong things when you watch the movie in that manner. I do genuinely think the obsession with practical effects has a "toyetic" aura around it, oh, you can FEEL it, you can own this puppet mask in real life!

No i dont think its that. Some people just dont like cgi. But most do enjoy cgi, but hate when its added to old movies, usually because they remember it being a puppet first. Or think theyre supposed to.
The special editions were always better. The effects were updated with VERY good reason, and it was smart to do it as early as the 90s.
Finally seeing it on the big screen and with the 4k restoration really was worth the money. I really know every little moment of that movie, sometimes in horrific detail (that tongue alien thing hanging from the ceiling behind 3PO when translating the sarlac death speech). Seeing it for the 8000th time but on the big screen, it was like the rancor was real. The movie was happening to me, instead of me just watching it. The faces were enourmous, and so is the acting in that movie. Its big and dramatic like a soap opera, but its not TV. Its a movie. Return of the Jedi HAS the be seen big. Also come to think of it, i went to a place where the seats vibrated with the bass.

Alexrd What about the war room segment at the end of the episode? The segment starts at 12:12 and seems like a harbinger of things to come with the prequels (Like hating the idea of Darth Vader as a Child).

I like to describe The Special Editions with an analogy from The Big Lebowski. In said film, Jeff Bridges goes on a quest to find his stolen rug, because "that rug really tied the room together." This is precisely the case for the Special Editions. They REALLY tied the Saga together.
