It looks you beat us to it, Alex. I would have suspected Anthony our French memeber to post this first, but I don't think he's been so active in recent months. Funnily enough, the other day we were on the Kenobi thread discussing whether we'd ever get to hear George speaking out in public again (last one arguably being the "white slavers" one) and how lamentable it was that there were now all these layers of intermediaries between us, making it difficult to be certain of anything.
George won't be around forever. Let's hear from him as much as we can. Hopefully he can write an autobiography (if he hasn't already done so?). For now, Cryo will be having a field day with this interview or should I say interviews
Très bien, George!

"I'm just a kid that grew up in a vineyard in Modesto, California who makes movies in San Francisco... I've actually never made a film in Hollywood as a director." -George Lucas
Beautiful.

I listened to his interviews from there. Great stuff. Happy to see him getting celebrated and him being in such good shape for his years. Many highlights from this, sometimes on things he doesn't speak often about -- I liked his comment about being a producer on films of directors he believes in, back in the '80s. He did a lot for some very talented people, and he mentions how sometimes he would take his name off the movie so they would get the spotlight. Just a great guy. He talks about helping to restart Kurosawa's career as well with Kagemusha. One gem of a quote: "Sound is 50% of a movie. The soundtrack is important. It's the secret sauce that makes the poetic art come out." Here is the full video.

"The audience doesn't know what they want to see." 😂 He's not uncle George anymore, he's Grampa George and he DGAF

He's not wrong either. I myself have often expressed a similar notion: Audiences only know what they like and only like what they know.
A generalization, to be sure, but found nonetheless.

Yeah, it's quite true. And I'm glad he finally said it, because it's something I know I think about often but am afraid to actually say (to most people).
And unfortunately, Ingram's statement is not only a cold, hard truth, but it is Hollywood's guiding principle and deciding factor in the flicks they churn out.

No one asked for it. No one understood it. No team of writers wrote it. No corporate board supported it. Yet, this send-up of Hollywood studio filmmaking became one of the most successful film franchises in history.... Always worth keeping in mind.

One thing I didn't pick up the first time around is he name drops Godfrey Reggio and meant to mention Koyaanisqatsi but called it Kagemusha instead, maybe because he had just been talking about it. He called it "my kind of movie" which, of course it is. 🤎

Great to hear from George things he hadn’t spoken of before
United Artists didn’t want George to do a Flash Gordon movie because they wanted Fellini to do it 😂
Thank goodness, because Star Wars is far superior!

It's a bit like Willow. Willow only happened because Lucas couldn't get the rights of The Hobbit. And IMO it's a better movie than the film trilogy they ended up making.

I dont especially like the LOTR trilogy, but Willow is a safe, bland imitation of the genre, if you ask me.
