It's a bit like Willow. Willow only happened because Lucas couldn't get the rights of The Hobbit. And IMO it's a better movie than the film trilogy they ended up making. that's a bold statement! I dont especially like the LOTR trilogy, but Willow is a safe, bland imitation of the genre, if you ask me. I'm referring to the Hobbit film trilogy, not the book or the LOTR film trilogy.

Ohhh. Yeah, I didn't make it too far into The Hobbit, so I can't speak on it. But there's something about that live action animation stuff from about 10-15 years ago that gives me the willies. Maybe it was the frame rate? I dunno, but I still don't love it.

I'm referring to the Hobbit film trilogy, not the book or the LOTR film trilogy. I love the Hobbit series. They are a love letter to Tolkien's world and they are also made not only as adaptation bas prequel to LOTR which is a feat because the readers of the books know how different in tone (and not only) both books are. Anyway, I didn't know that Lucas planned to adapt the Hobbit but in a way I'm glad that he couldn't. He is a great artist but this also means that he want to make his own thing and in an adaptation one should be restrained as Peter Jackson said. In a adaptation one should show what he/she sees in the book and not how he would write the book. So one of the main reason that love Lucas SW: for its uniqueness and originality should be a problem in an adaptation. Yes, SW is inspired by Dune, etc. But inspired by and based on are different things. I liked Willow, but for me it is more Indiana Jones type than Star Warsy type. Is more...well, superfluous, I think. More a product of Lucas and Spielberg tandem than Lucas own thing. Anyway, I'm glad that at last!!! they give Lucas the prize as artist and not only as businessman and successful technical director.

But I don't think that was exercised in the Hobbit movies. Then again, I heard that it had a troubled production and Jackson had to come in rather late to try to salvage whatever they were doing. Not that it excuses the many creative choices they chose to do. I'm also glad that Lucas was forced to do his own thing.
