I want this show to dive into the deteriorating relationship between Obi and Owen, as Owen ain't too fond of that "crazy old man," by Episode IV. Did Owen ever try to get involved with fighting the good fight and it almost cost him dearly? We shall see we shall see. The show is probably going to get into that a bit. On Naboo News (the blog of forum member Anthony), there's this quote from series director Deborah Chow (originally via Entertainment Weekly -- which, by the way, is the final print cover version, as the magazine is about to go completely digital): naboonews.com/2022/03/09/obi-wan-kenobi-official-pictures-and-information-revealed/As you can see from the picture, there's clearly a tense moment between Reva, the "Third Sister" Inquisitor, and Owen (on what looks to be Tatooine): And if you're game to read some (mild-ish) spoilers, there's a potentially touching scene rumoured between Obi-Wan and Owen, which involves Obi-Wan trying to pass on a gift to Luke: naboonews.com/2022/02/23/obi-wan-kenobi-rumor-about-scenes-with-luke-owen-and-beru/

Based on the teaser and the leaks, it sounds great. I loved the Battle of the Heroes/Dual of the Fates/Anakin's Dark Deeds medley in the teaser, even though it was easy fan service It's curious that we still don't know who's the main composer for the series.

I loved the Battle of the Heroes/Dual of the Fates/Anakin's Dark Deeds medley in the teaser, even though it was easy fan service Oh, it was/is -- and it's having the intended effect. A lot of people on the official YouTube channel, in the comments section for the trailer, were clearly swept away by the music, and there's a lot of praise for the trailer in general. It's really starting to feel like this is going to be the Prequel generation's TFA. I'm probably just too old by now (turned 32 this year) to get that excited myself, but I certainly feel the anticipation. I enjoyed the trailer and I feel there's potential, I'm just dying to see real Prequel aesthetic again. I get that this is set at a time when the Empire ruled, but the way the Prequels just looked was a big part of what made me fall in love with the movies. I miss that time... when Star Wars used to look and feel like Naboo, Kamino or Geonosis.
I'm still cursing JJ Abrams for failing to give as a shot of Naboo in TROS^^

I'm still cursing JJ Abrams for failing to give as a shot of Naboo in TROS^^ It is Lucas vision that made the PT look so beautiful. The beauty of the PT was what hooked me to Star Wars (I'm older and still I wasn't interested in them before the prequel era) apart from the story, of course. But I doubt we will see the beauty again. Is not that I'm some radical PT purist, is just that I see what are aestestics of the contemporary visual artists. Abrams made SW look ugly. For the record, I strongly dislike the Last Jedi but at least it wasn't ugly. If they follow the Abrams' way... Anyway, replicating SW in hundreds of miniseries, spinoffs of spinoffs, etc. is not exacly my idea of expanding the universe. Maybe I would accept it if they didn't make this sequel trilogy. I won't watch the mini series but if the prequel actors at last would be praised for what they did (especially Hayden) well, it would be great.

That was how "old" George Lucas was when he filmed the majority of ANH! Not old, at all. I'm 38. You're two years from thirty, I'm two years (actually, more like 13 months) from 40. Maybe I feel my age more than I did ten years ago, and I see a few greys sprouting through that I didn't have then, but I can still feel pangs of excitement toward Star Wars things -- well, sometimes. I mean, yeah, we all age, but growing up is optional. In any case: You young whippersnapper, you! Right. I liked some of the sequel planets/moons, such as Kef Bir, Kijimi, and Exegol, and also that tantalising snapshot of exotic locales in the lightspeed skipping sequence at the start of TROS (the Crystal Chaos of Cardovyte, the Mirror-Spires of Ivexia, and the Megafauna Chasm of the Typhonic Nebula). As far as this new series goes, the Hong Kong-based "Blade Runner" planet (Daiyu) looks interesting: www.themarysue.com/everything-we-know-about-daiyu/Nevertheless, I hear ya. Overall, the locales seen in these Disney-era Star Wars productions have mostly been a little... restrained, so far. That would have been nice.

I love Star Wars and I don't want to miss it, but Lucas' potential was significant and he could have achieved wonders. That would have been nice. Rey should have buried the sabers on Naboo, ideally next to Padmé's grave. It's a shame that the director's nostalgia for desert worlds and Tatooine won over thematical and story logic, especially once they turned her into a Palpatine. Then again, I don't really care. The ST is an alternative universe scenario in my head canon, at best.

I mean, yeah, we all age, but growing up is optional. In any case: You young whippersnapper, you! George was truly a wunderkind-like phenomenon and I kind of share Coppola's sentiment that the world lost something when Star Wars took over his life. I love Star Wars and I don't want to miss it, but Lucas' potential was significant and he could have achieved wonders. I don't know. I suppose, in the words of a "A Bronx Tale", there's nothing worse than wasted talent. However, we need to bear in mind several facets of the Star Wars phenomenon and George Lucas' own personality: i) Lucas was really burned by the commercial failure of his first film "THX-1138". This was a really big shock for him and a major reality check, perhaps more than he has ever spoken about. In film school, he was protected by the open-minded, 1960s arthouse environment, where experimentation was welcomed, and his confidence and ego were built up by his work being the recipient of many awards. When he left film school and went out into the real world, it must have devastated him that his debut feature was an unqualified box-office bomb. Add in some unwanted tinkering by the film studio and you already have the perfect ingredients for a rebellious, I'm-never-doing-this-again George Lucas to emerge. ii) Lucas has admitted to holding grudges when things don't go his way. This fact might be a little surprising and disquieting given his reserved, affable nature, and the Jedi philosophy he layered into Star Wars. What could possibly rattle a man like George Lucas? His divorce, for one. Another is when people blast him or the support he expects to get isn't there. For instance, in over eighty hours' worth of interviews with biographer Dale Pollock (who wrote "Skywalking: The Life And Films Of George Lucas") in 1982, Lucas supposedly slammed his mentor Francis Ford Coppola for failing to back him up over "American Graffiti" and alleged that he had stolen his concept of "Apocalypse Now". Pollock's manuscript upset Lucas and Coppola and lawsuits were threatened. Pollock alleges that Lucas was livid and bluntly said to him: "I'll never do this again; no one will ever do this to me again; I will control everything that's ever written about me." But something obviously went down between Lucas and Coppola as they were estranged in the 1980s after the Original Trilogy. Moreover, for a brief while, Lucas even shaved his beard. He later said he was going through a midlife crisis (he also tried contact lenses for the first time), and maybe he was, but the beard-shaving was also a way for him to distance himself from Coppola (he grew a beard in the first place mainly in emulation of Coppola who he looked up to in earlier years). This is a side of GL that Lucas generally keeps private (and likely a big part of the reason he was so upset with Pollock). But in concert with the first point above, you can perceive his deep frustration that the world basically rejected the auteur side of his nature and good concepts are stolen -- i.e., they must therefore be protected. Consistent with this observation, note that Lucas has many times asserted since the making of the prequels that he plans on making highly personal, experimental films once more, but that he has no plans to ever release these to the public. In other words, since the public failed to recognise his genius the first time around, he now intends to deprive the public of that genius and exclude them from ever commenting or critiquing his auteuristic work -- and, by extension, his auteur side -- ever again. iii) Lucas loves money and control. Despite the fact that we, as prequel fans, have vigorously defended Lucas' filmmaking honour over the years and admire his choices, the elephant in the room is that Lucas is also an exceptional businessman and loves his green. He loves getting one over his enemies. Money equals freedom -- at least, if used the right way. While Lucas is not materialistic in the way that some people are, his selling to Disney is really the ultimate proof that money and the personal/artistic freedom it can bring are a higher priority to him than seeing his own creation (i.e., the sequel trilogy) through to conclusion. Over the years, Star Wars turned into a merchandising juggernaut, and Lucas profited handsomely from it. Reviews left on the employment website Glassdoor repeatedly emphasise that pay at Lucasfilm is poor and roughly half the industry standard. And that didn't start under Disney. Lucas' tight management of money and resources when making his films is legendary. And he is known (though this has not been widely disseminated) to have entered into a capitalist conspiracy with Steve Jobs to deprive his employees of certain freedoms to ensure that costs were kept down by keeping their wages artificially low. iv) Lucas is ruthlessly autocratic. He just does it in subtle, intellectual ways, and avoids screaming at his employees. As much as Lucasfilm may have turned into a millstone around his neck, he obviously found something satisfying about exerting control over others and making hard-nosed decisions, or he wouldn't have remained in control of his companies for so long. Thus, when we say that the world was deprived of great films from a talented filmmaker because that filmmaker was diverted by a fantasy franchise of his making, we must remember that it was he who made it in the first place, and he made it because he wanted to, and then he stayed with it (well, until he abandoned it) because he wanted to. Marcia Lucas has even suggested that Star Wars was running through his head in inchoate form from the moment she met him, while he was still enrolled at USC. Indeed, if Lucas was burned by the failure of THX as I've stated, and if he was pissed at Coppola for not offering enough support of his filmmaking projects, then here we have a good explanation for why he became so driven by money and turned into a movie mogul himself -- he wanted to get back at Francis and do it better. Lucas has also stated that he developed several of his talents based on advice and dares from Coppola. Lucas' mentality back then, in his own words, when prompted to do a lighter, funnier movie than THX (which became "American Graffiti") was "I'll show him" (although, to be fair, Coppola wasn't the only one urging him to go that route). v) Lucas loves Star Wars. Yes, last but not least, I think it's reasonable to say that the man is in love with his own creation, despite occasionally having a love-hate relationship with his having essentially become George "Star Wars" Lucas. Let us say it plain: Lucas loves the world of Star Wars, he loves the characters, and he loves the mega-accomplishment of turning a basic idea, back when he was still a relatively unproven filmmaker (one box-office bomb, one hit movie to his name) into a globe-spanning entertainment franchise and a modern fable -- edutainment -- for children. And that is a huge achievement. Star Wars was good for him and he was good for Star Wars. In many ways, as far as his personal journey goes, it's the ultimate example of a symbiotic relationship, which Qui-Gon explains to Anakin: "Lifeforms living together for mutual advantage". For, to paraphrase Qui-Gon, without George Lucas, Star Wars would not exist, and we would have no experience of something so personal and yet so epic. Star Wars agrees with Lucas' personality, because, as he said a few years ago to Charlie Rose, when the universe created him, it fused in his DNA both a pragmatic, take-charge guy and a romantic daydreaming type of person. So with Star Wars, Lucas was able to have his cake and eat it. Not without some cost, maybe. But it was a very good deal overall. vi) Lucas is lazy. Okay, this truly is the last point -- and, in some senses, the least. It sounds crazy, right? When Lucas gets going on something, he truly gets going. And people who experience Lucas' level of success (i.e., we're talking a handful of people here) hardly sit around waiting for things to happen. These are extraordinary individuals. But the creative impulse is an imperfect, erratic one, often thwarted by doubt and indecision. And in Lucas' case, it can take him a while to find the momentum to commit to something. By his own admission, he not only struggles to write screenplays and must chain himself to the desk to get his requisite five pages done (a minimum daily target he sets himself when writing), but there's even a great deal of sloth involved in his just getting started on a new project in the first place. Even when making "Return Of The Jedi" and nearing the end of the "first chapter" of his filmmaking journey, Lucas quipped in an interview with the New York Times in 1982 that he'd "rather be in bed watching television". He was obviously expressing some fatigue due to all the struggles he'd endured bringing his vision to the screen, but he wasn't entirely kidding. One of the things Marcia Lucas complained about in their marriage was that Lucas liked to spend a good deal of his spare time watching TV and eating TV dinners. Star Wars was clearly something he was able to embrace because it brought him enough joy and satisfaction that he was able to return to it and stick with it for as long as it needed him -- and he needed it. Of course, in all of this, I'm not saying that a few more non-Star Wars movies written and directed by George Lucas wouldn't have been welcome. It's definitely the case that Lucas retreated into Star Wars and his film companies to some extent, rather than face the prospect of new challenges head-on, or suffer new setbacks along the way. But if you consider all the preceding factors, it seems the universe was pushing him in the direction of Star Wars, and Lucas lacked the tenacity -- or the foolishness -- to resist. Well, in the story they told, or the OT-clinging construct they used, Rey has no connection to Padme, and Padme is never mentioned by anyone in the ST. Padme was also never a Jedi. It wouldn't have made much sense showing Naboo at the end, just for Rey to pay homage to someone she never met and seemingly had no knowledge of. Moreover, Rey herself grew up on a desert planet, so her going to Tatooine -- "where it all began" -- is more poetic, as she acknowledges her roots and puts the sabers of Luke and Leia to rest near where Shmi was buried and Luke lost his foster parents (and where Luke made the decision to "learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi (like his father)". Ideally, Luke and Leia would never have been split up, and could have been a more powerful team (as Rey and Kylo became) if they remained in each other's company as children. However, that could have alerted them to the bad guys. Presumably, there is something special about Tatooine, given its constant appearance in the Lucas films (barring TESB, although it is mentioned at the end), and Obi-Wan says at the end of ROTS that they must take the twins somewhere "where the Sith will not sense their presence". Maybe the sabers are destined to be picked up again one day, but I like the visual of them disappearing into the sand. After all, Anakin hated sand, but that was him basically telling Padme, in more disguised form, "I don't want things to change" (as he says to his mother in Episode I). If change, however, is the one constant in the universe, it's apt that the totems that embody the Skywalker twins (and the ancient ways of the Jedi) are covered in sand, moments before Rey activates her unique saber for the first time and assumes the name of Skywalker for herself -- anchoring herself in what has come before, but also moving forward, open to what lies ahead. A lot of fans may dislike TROS and find the ending frustrating, even insulting, but I think it's a mature, eloquent way to end the ST (given the themes and its OT-fixated narrative), and I'm not sure what could have been better. All the best SW endings are infused with melancholy, in my opinion.

Ewan was live on the telly on BBC's One's "The One Show" about an hour ago and he was looking good. Here's a picture from my phone: The new Obi-Wan series got mentioned at the end of his appearance, for all of thirty seconds. Ewan instead spent the time talking about his work with UNICEF and the situation in Ukraine. Although I may be a bit grumpy about the way Ewan has spoken about the prequels, he's a good guy, and his work with UNICEF reminds you of what's really important in life. There is real evil and suffering in the world, and lots of people in need. I was let down by the trailer. There's many, admittedly quite small, things I can complain about. I don't think Obi's longer hair look suits him. And am I the only one or does he not do the Alec Guinness impersonation anymore? He just sounded like Ewan McGregor to me. I think the Inquisitors are dull villains and I don't like how they keep making more of them. The look of the show seems to again try to imitate the OT. The costumes are simple and dourly colored, and the world seems desolate. I was hoping for more of a prequel flair to the visual style. I didn't like the voice over dialogue. It sounds like generic end of the world babble you'd hear in some modern YA book adaptation or Marvel movie. The reports that the initial ideas for the show were too bleak and they had to "lighten it up" sound true to me, but the trailer still feels very drab. The only exciting thing for me is Hayden's return. I just hope we get to see him outside of the Vader suit.

There's no denying that The Hunger Games had a massive impact on Disney-era Star Wars. I didn't notice the YA touches in the trailer, but I wouldn't be surprised. It has been a while since I watched the Hunger Games. The consequences of Hunger Games have been terrible on cinema. A few years ago there were multiple YA series that copied it like the Divergent series. The only YA adaptation I've liked aside from the first four Harry Potters is the first Maze Runner movie because it was more Lord of the Flies than Hunger Games. The rest of the series turned into predictable YA garbage with a resistance of young people fighting for freedom. Of course, Hunger Games and the like were also influenced by Star Wars, so maybe it's appropriate that it is in turn influenced by them. I just don't care for it. ...and then blows away like sand. Because the Jedi are, like, dust in the wind and stuff. Woah.Sorry. I'm being an asshole. LOL. Well, yeah, that does seem to be a motif. Not Ingram being an asshole, but the Jedi as these elusive, implacable beings. "Obi-Wan Kenobi? Surely he must be dead by now." My other interpretation of the "blows away like sand" effect, apart from it looking cool, which entails some mild assholeishness of my own, is them saying: "The prequels? Nah, we've got better than those things." (The prequels, when they came to DVD, had gold writing on the spines, contrasting with the silver typography on the spines of the OT films). Anyway, the suggestion of illusions and things being transient -- or "always in motion" -- via that visual effect is interesting. I'm sure the pigeon moment is a reference to some TCW or Rebels installment, or an obscure anime, or something. I was reminded -- drawing on my limited cinematic knowledge -- of the "dove" moment in "Blade Runner" (when Roy Batty dies), and a little bit of that flying creature distracting Aayla Secura moments before she is gunned down by the clone troopers on Felucia (a planet Lucas reportedly wanted to reprise in the Sequel Trilogy): Sort of. I never really noticed her gender, race, or look till now. I just take it as a given that the SW universe is a pretty diverse place, even though the franchise has mainly been oriented around white, English-speaking leads, all exuding a relatively "straight" sexuality. The Auralnauts material is always fun. It's great to see prequel actors back, indeed. It looks like there's some quality to this production (obvious statement is obvious), but also an attempt to genuinely tie it into all the existing swathes of the Star Wars tapestry. But yeah, it has that "2022" look and feel, alright. I think you're right that the birds are a Blade Runner reference. The rooftops of the city planet look just like the rooftop where Deckard and Roy have their final confrontation. It remains to be seen if the planet is Coruscant or not, but they seem to be slightly moving away from the look of Coruscant from the prequels, and consciously riffing more on Blade Runner. Of course, Lucas was influenced by Blade Runner as well. It's not a bad place to take your cues from.

I was let down by the trailer. There's many, admittedly quite small, things I can complain about. A perfect distillation of the typical SW fanboy mentality right there! I'm pulling your leg a bit, because at least your qualification ("admittedly quite small") shows self-awareness. And, obviously, you are entitled to your opinion. It's even one I share a bit. Since the end of the PT, Star Wars has struggled to offer anything all that compelling, IMO. I mean, after ROTS -- how do you follow that? "Possibly." I would also have assumed Obi-Wan's "Jedi mullet" days are long behind him. For better or worse, they seem to be emulating the "bedraggled mystic" look of Luke in TLJ. Obi-Wan's shabby, untamed locks are meant, I think, to convey a degree of self-neglect; since that is where the story locates this version of Obi-Wan, who has all but given up on the idea of overthrowing the Empire when the series begins. But at least this sorta ties his look into his AOTC phase, as if Obi-Wan is subconsciously trying to turn the clock back a little. This is a "wait and see" for me. Some other people have commented similarly. I dunno. Again, this is a "wait and see" for me. I think it's hard to tell from a handful of lines. There's plenty of Ewan that shows through in the prequel incarnations of Obi-Wan. His impersonation has always been coloured by his own personality. I do hope there is still some attempt being made to emulate Sir Alec in look, cadence, and mannerisms, however. Ouch. Personally, I like the idea of a caste of Jedi hunters. It was only shown in the most fleeting and fitful of ways in the Sequel Trilogy, with the Knights of Ren. This is the first time we're seeing a lethal, shadow-y sect of this type in live action where their impact on the plot actually sums to something. Yes, of course, there's the Sith, but we've never gotten a Ronin-type class working for the bad guys before. Technically, the "Rule Of Two" limits the Sith to exactly that number, so I can understand them wanting to widen the menace of the Sith and expand the seriousness of Imperial rule a little bit. And if anyone is to be blamed for the concept, it's Dave Filoni who introduced this band of mercenaries in "Rebels". I think it's nice to have some consistency here across the brand, so to speak. Yeah, this is more of a sticking point for me. I just picked up a brilliant little book by Dorling Kindersley last week: The Art Book. It's beautifully laid out and there's all manner of wonderful, riveting quotes and epigrams in there. Aside from the splendid presentation (up to DK's usual standards), that was the main reason I bought it. Some of those quotes just plain knocked me out. This one instantly evoked the joy of the PT: "A pot of paint has been flung in the face of the public."That was actually a critic denigrating an oil painting by the French artist Henri Matisse known as Woman with a Hat in 1905 (one hundred years, incidentally, before the release of ROTS). To quote the Wikipedia article: The prequels were -- you might argue -- equally shocking, with their wild, unrepentant embrace of digital technology, and exorbitant explosion of costuming, place, rhythm, and colour. We haven't really seen anything of their like since Lucas sold to Disney. There does seem to be a concerted, collectivist effort to blend Star Wars into the existing scenery of modern pop culture ( what culture?) from the new copyright holders, to an extent that Lucas never pursued. I prefer more boldness. But whether we'll ever see that again from this property is another matter. Still, I want to keep some hope alive (perhaps the most Obi-Wan-ish statement of all?). Not that this series is going to absolutely dazzle in the visual stakes, but that it'll be reasonable in its scope and intensity, and that it'll fill in some missing pieces and find a new angle on Obi-Wan in the process. Yeah, there's a touch of that. Or rather, the faux yin-yang effect: annihilation and despair on one hand, meeting hope and resilience on the other. Or, in the words of the parody trailer I recently shared in here, "Hope Is Dope": That said, I really like the voiceover of the Grand Inquisitor, played by Rupert Friend -- by many accounts, a great actor. There's such a pompous, self-satisfied, almost orgiastic quality about it. "He cannot help it!" He sounds like a boarding school headmaster. The classic British tone of a repressed homoerotic sadist. Perfect for Imperial-era Star Wars. I think the trailer suggests there's going to be a fair amount of action and subterfuge. We'll have to wait and see if that's really the case. However, the trailer brings a certain energy with it; as if keen to distance the series from its earlier instantiation of gloomy navel-gazing. Even the Disney+ logo at the end is tartly energised by a new lightsaber animation. It could end up being an awkward blend: a curate's egg of millennial self-pity, tethered to existential meditations, combined with jarring, florid action sequences. I might here recommend looking to "Rogue One" and "Solo", which were both interfered with by Kathleen Kennedy to generally decent results. Aesthetically, they are perhaps closest to this miniseries (which was originally planned as another spinoff movie). If there's some basic enjoyment and agreement to be found there, fans will probably find it here with this miniseries, too. Excellent screengrabs. "Blade Runner" (the original) still canes the shit out of everything out there today. Anyway, it's been confirmed that the planet isn't Coruscant. It is very Hong Kong-inspired and goes by the name Daiyu. Here is a link I posted previously: www.themarysue.com/everything-we-know-about-daiyu/At least we're getting something a little new here. The cyberpunk aesthetic is almost in danger of becoming a little passe, but if the story is told well, the environment should work its magic. Also: The leaked footage of Lucas' "Underworld" series was also set on a similar world: Although, there, in the description, the planet is stated (or strongly hinted) to be "the lower levels of Coruscant". Which speaks to a persistent issue with all these Disney productions: Instead of using the same locales that Lucas did, many alternates have been created. This smacks of rebranding. Consider how Jakku is a blatant phone-in of Tatooine, or how a planet called Hosnian Prime is destroyed instead of Coruscant. TFA set the mold and this is how things have carried on ever since. Perhaps there'll be a little more imagination this time, perhaps not.

While Nutsa generally has lower standards than I do with pop-cinema stuff and her takeaways are sometimes a bit obvious and her whole Zoomer style of snark-video commentary is ultimately a speed generationally removed from my own... Something about her overall execution has about it an undeniable moxie & charm—perhaps it's the whole 'deadpan quirky girl' personality that comes off legit over affectatious. And, yes, that trailer parody pretty much sums up my side of things.

Excellent screengrabs. "Blade Runner" (the original) still canes the shit out of everything out there today. Anyway, it's been confirmed that the planet isn't Coruscant. Perhaps there'll be a little more imagination this time, perhaps not. I realize I was pulling apart a tiny sliver of a teaser of what's to come, but I had to get my fanboy gripes out there. This is my most anticipated project so far from Disney. That colorful quote well describes the prequels, and what I feel like Disney is afraid to do. They are afraid to take a chance at creating something truly dazzling, that might in the process alienate a few customers. They are going the safe route, and trying to please everybody. I also get a feeling, which is hard to describe, of Disney wanting to keep their Star Wars projects not only "grounded" but "prestige" in a way. It's like they want their products to be taken more seriously. So no otherworldly planets, just deserts for the most part. The acting has been modernized to come closer to "method" acting, away from the 30's space opera serial style of Lucas' films. Like Finn would say, "It's a feeling." The modernized, post-Game of Thrones "prestige" approach they are going for feels at odds with what Star Wars has been since the very beginning. Star Wars was based on pulp and Saturday matinee serials, and had a B-movie sensibility. That is not bad or a dig at Star Wars, it's the style Lucas was going for. You can see the difference especially in Rogue One and The Last Jedi, which tried very hard to have a particular feel. But The Rise of Skywalker was an exception, I think, and was more in line with Lucas' sensibilities than the other Disney movies.
