...geeks/nerds (I've never quite understood the difference) - Geeks - Obsessed with pop-cultural subject matter.
- Nerds - Obsessed with intellectual, academic or technical subject matter.
As I understand it in the simplest of terms, anyway. Yah, well, to me, the difference between the two is fuzzy and not clearly defined. For instance, on The Free Dictionary (my general go-to for words and terms, though not to the exclusion of other sources), there is very little difference between the terms worth remaking upon: www.thefreedictionary.com/geekwww.thefreedictionary.com/nerdSo... I dunno. Seems, to me, it's just another way for people with fringe interests, or intense obsessions, to be denigrated and not taken very seriously. Of course, no-one should take themselves very seriously -- or only as seriously as they're prepared to see others. Gotta keep my Jar Jar flame burning bright. And yes, I suppose this is a pretty nerdy/geeky lexical "niche" we've landed ourselves in right now.

I'm feeling another reverse bell curve comparison coming on.
I jive well with people on one end, "normal" people, who watch Star Wars as they would any movie. I also jive well with people on the opposite end of that, unabashedly sincere Lucas lovers. These archetypes are far more similar than they seem. Qui-Gon-like. Nerds who are cool. Cool people who are nerds.
In the middle, you've got the safe, graphic tee-ready version of Star Wars, "cool nerds", shallow film criticism, overly serious gatekeepers. Buncha blowhards. I got no time for that!

I'm feeling another reverse bell curve comparison coming on. Something's happening. I'm not the Naberrie Fielder I should be. I want more reverse bell curve comparisons, and I know I shouldn't. Yeah, normies and prequelsexuals are good -- it's those strange creatures that dwell in-between, the hipster nerds that chase approval and "objective" filmmaking standards, that cause all the trouble.

Summer 2019
Me to SubtextMining, telling him about the prospects of a member rejoining: *Palpatine voice* Cryogenic will become more powerful than either of us!
Right now
Cryogenic literally has more posts than SubtextMining and I combined.
Somebody somewhere: *Mace voice* He's too dangerous to be left alive!

Cryo ProofYup! My name is an admixture of being inspired by science, including a physics trip I undertook in Sixth Form (that's when you're in the 16-18 age range for American readers), where I saw liquid nitrogen's freezing capabilities demonstrated right in front of me, to notable examples of freezing in science-fiction/fantasy movies I enjoyed at the time, like "Demolition Man", "Terminator 2", and Han being frozen in TESB.

My commiserations to all English members of NF on their loss in the European Championship final on Sunday (football, or sawwwker as you say in the States )
It's not coming home.
To any Italian members: Forza Azzurri!

To any Italian members: Forza Azzurri! LOL! I'm English and I was far more into the tennis. I only watched the England final out of some ancestral loyalty. It was hideously boring. Give me Wimbledon over Wembley any day. On the other hand, the racist abuse those players suffered the next day was terrible -- and enabled by the Tories who said players taking the knee was "gesture politics". Anyway, yup. The Italian guy lost in the tennis final (but still played commendably), and the Italians won at football. Seems fair to me.

I don't understand the last two posts. *shrug* I think you automatically earned yourself a catchphrase as ordained by our webmaster. My remark? Your comment reminded me of the saying, "I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue."

Back to Elvis; I suddenly remembered as kids my older, teenage brother was obsessed with WWF Wrestling and he'd run up and grab me when I was laying on the couch watching TV and helicopter spin me, or full Nelson me, or some other painful, traumatic, body pretzel thing, and I'd always scream "Don't!!!" as loud as I could.
Also at the time there was a recurring tv commercial for an Elvis Presley greatest hits compilation that featured clips from several songs.
And never missing an opportunity to tease me, whenever the clip would play for the song "Don't" my brother would start scoff-laughing and say it was my theme song.
Oh, and I found the commercial.

Hello there, everyone! I see this place has been up and running for quite a while. It looks great! Subtext Mining invited me over and I think I'm gonna like it here. Thanks, my friend! There's a couple of names here that I haven't seen in a long time. It warms my heart to see you all alive and kicking ❤️ Your Darth Vader is pink. It's a pink-colored Vader.
I just...I just thought you should know that.
I'm taking issue with the matter, as I disapprove of Darth Vader depictions in any such tone. I don't like Vader all girly or gay-stuff. Nobody asked me if a Mattel-bubblegum-flavored 'Beach Party' Darth Vader was okay, and I'm declaring right here and now that it's not okay. I'm not gonna demand that you change it, but I will say that you and me are not starting on good terms, Lulu. Not good at all.
You've Pinked my Vader™ ...and I'm upset about it.
Also, welcome. Try the punch.

There's a couple of names here that I haven't seen in a long time. It warms my heart to see you all alive and kicking ❤️ Welcome, Lulu! I recognise you from the DPRK/PRC of message boards: the dreaded TFN. You've just bumped our member count up to 49. We're one away from 50. Yep, we set this place up the year of Star Wars' 40th anniversary, as serendipity would have it. And we've added onto and refined it a bit since then. Make yourself at home and pink-up the place as much as you like. Also, please excuse me here, since I need to respond to our webmaster, Subtext Mining, and continue our little Elvis/Beatles/Star Wars sidebar: Back to Elvis; I suddenly remembered as kids my older, teenage brother was obsessed with WWF Wrestling and he'd run up and grab me when I was laying on the couch watching TV and helicopter spin me, or full Nelson me, or some other painful, traumatic, body pretzel thing, and I'd always scream "Don't!!!" as loud as I could. Nice! "Don't" is one of Elvis' great early ballads, highlighting his awesome potential as a balladeer par excellence, and showcasing his fine ability in those days (when he was young, healthy, and eager) to craft concise, compelling slices of indelible pop music. You should have said back to your brother, every time he spun or sliced you, "How do you think I feel?" -- which is another fine offering from the early Elvis (from his album of the same name): Man, I love the cover of that album, and the bubbly energy of that song is fantastic. The greatest hits compilation you refer to was "50 Years 50 Hits", and as the title suggests, it was released on his 50th birthday. It is strange to think of Elvis reaching 50. Of course, he checked out of this "Heartbreak Hotel" of a world at only 42 -- the same "age" as the Star Wars Saga (as commemorated internally in TROS), naturally. As Elvis died, so Star Wars was born. It's even stranger that the famous "Wow! signal" was received only the day before Elvis died (his last full day on Earth); and he himself is connected to "2001", starting most of his 1970s concerts with the famous overture, and dying on August 16th 1977, a date which adds up to 2001. Even his last album, "Moody Blue", released only one month before his death, depicts him inside a monolith. Incidentally, he met The Beatles on August 27th 1965, which adds up to 2000. Anyway, as for your link to "Don't" itself, that's taken from another greatest hits compilation, "ELV1S: Elvis: 30 #1 Hits". This release was very big (Elvis' first of the new millennium) and helped pull me a bit more into the world of Elvis -- though I was even more taken by the "A Little Less Conversation" single that was out at the same time. Of course, showing how much The Beatles and Elvis feed into one another, that greatest hits release in 2002 was modelled on The Beatles' own greatest hits compilation, "1", which came out in the year 2000: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_(Beatles_album)en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELV1S:_30_No._1_HitsOne year after the Elvis compilation, Michael Jackson got in on the action with his own "Number Ones" greatest hits album: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_Ones_(Michael_Jackson_album)The Holy Trinity of pop music icons, right there. And, of course, all three have impressive music catalogues in general. MJ himself also profited enormously by effectively owning most of The Beatles' catalogue (or the publishing rights to most of their songs) in the mid-80s, outbidding Paul McCartney himself! MJ, in those early years of his career, was one shrewd motherfucker. www.history.com/this-day-in-history/michael-jackson-takes-control-of-the-beatles-publishing-rightsMJ would later marry Lisa-Marie Presley in 1994, though the marriage would be annulled two years later. So he would pull in different ways from the legacy of major white musicians/performers who preceded him, despite most of his music heroes being of black ancestry. MJ also told Lisa-Marie he didn't want to end up like Elvis, but he too fell into depression and a cycle of drug addiction that proved fatal. "I will not betray the Republic." But somehow, we find those ways to go against our strongest vows and promises, don't we?
