With the age-old cosmic dichotomy as to whether one is a Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins kinda guy, I can't pretend... I'm a Phil Collins guy. Sure, both look like your uncle -- one who'd be an English teacher, the other a forklift driver -- and that is admittedly a pretty decent Gabriel song. Still, I'm a Phil Collins guy.  |

So this happened. I work in a fairly low level customer service job, and today I got a very common, unremarkable, mundane call from Brian Henson! Once I realized who it was, I was tempted to say hello or acknowledge the fact, or something, but I kept it professional. He was very friendly and personable. I imagine, if I were a bigger fan, I could have made a complete ass of myself. If George Lucas called, I don't know what would be appropriate to say, if anything at all. I guess when it's your job, you can just be nice to them like you're nice to everybody else.
If it was someone less famous whose work i really cared about, or even just admired, I think I might actually say something complementary.

If it was me, I'd probably keep it professional too. Although if it was someone like George Lucas, I'd probably end the call by just saying thanks for his work.

If I ever ended up on one end of the phone opposite Brian Henson, I'd merely afford him mad props for marrying Sloane from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.  If Lucas, I'd probably just ask him about hair styling tips for men. |
