Something strange I’ve noticed is the apparent inability of a vast swathe of Star Wars fandom to recognize themselves in the mirror that is the Star Wars saga. What I’m referring to is an ignorance of MIMESIS, which is the idea of art imitating life. Things can go in the other direction, too, of course, where people in the real world either consciously or unconsciously imitate the movies, which is ANTI-MIMESIS. Maybe the fandom does sometimes recognize itself, but I have noticed the obvious lack of articulation on the subject from my years of forum experience. Someone will actually say something and seemingly not SEE or HEAR what fictional characters and situations and quotes they are very similarly parroting. Because if they did, they probably wouldn’t have said it. I find this more frustrating than interesting. How often do you see a figurative stormtrooper missing their shots on a forum? All the time. Likewise, how often does anyone metaphorically meet a Jedi? Rarely. A lot of the posts about Star Wars that I have encountered across the WWW seem to have been unfortunately recorded by unthinking, villainous minions getting into arguments about nothing important. Is that why they’re depicted so often in the movies as hordes of faceless, battling drones? This is what I want to talk about. I don’t necessarily want to go through every response and say, “Oh, that’s just this or that from the movies.” It can be done, though. I’m more interested in people becoming aware of what they are copying in relation to the movies as a sort of reference frame. Let’s avoid giving into the dark side and use the force for knowledge and defense, shall we? So, maybe we can say a bit and then try to explore where it’s coming from. The movies are like memeplexes that say quite a bit. What you’re posting here on any occasion probably falls within the scope of one of these movies, not only because it’s a forum about these movies, but because the content of discussion ABOUT the movies will most likely reflect the content expressed BY the movies. That’s mimesis and anti-mimesis practically working. I wonder who I sound like from Star Wars right now. Any ideas? I’m trying to explain a philosophical concept whereby one can more easily detect the fictional source of one’s factual actions, and vice versa, via similarity. Does that ever happen in Star Wars? Let’s find out. Hmm…
