stampidhd280pro Isn't YouTube's selection primarily fan films and the odd art-house or short? There are some compelling documentaries on there though, and you'll see I've set up a new thread for one.
Cryogenic You're right to warn of renting as a false economy, but if you're going to buy a film and watch it only once and then forget about it, which makes more sense? To be fair, we can propose the same question to a subscription service seldom used (I've been guilty of this one in the past ). For me, the volatile nature of software makes paid digital downloads even more suspect: if I'm going to "own" it I want a physical copy that's not prone to the whims of quickly outdated software, operating systems, obsolescent hardware, internet authentication/verification and so on. DVD and Blu-ray are international standards, where many companies contribute, and I'm increasingly finding that luring as the streaming market becomes more segmented, with more competitors (usually a good thing but not here) and their dwindling libraries.
Speaking of which, how many of you have access to a local library? You know, the places where you can borrow books for free and do some peaceful study. They are an essential part of any functioning democracy, and guess what, they do DVDs too! Pop over there soon and maybe we can borrow something that's commonly in stock.

Youtube has a lot of B movies and movies that are out of print, or are now public domain, like silent films. It might be easy to disregard older, more obscure movies but they're an important source of cultural edification. You mention short films, all of GL's student films are on youtube. Between his short films, all the art films that inspired him, and all the silent films on youtube, it seems like the perfect place to start.
Tubi is a free app with plenty of movies, even more recent and popular ones. ArchDuke, maybe you should pick a movie from there. Though, lemme make sure it's available worldwide....
Also, public libraries are less than ideal for the simple fact that every library's collection is different. And I don't know about your area, but the libraries in my city are still shut down.

Youtube has also begun streaming mainstream Hollywood movies with ads, such as one of my personal favorites, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels!

Well, it looks like Ingram has selected our first movie, Hawk the Slayer. Let's get this ball rolling.
I propose this film club be its own subsection of the board named Picture Palace Plaza. (Picture palace being an old term for movie theatre, and Palace Plaza being an actual in-universe location in Theed.) Each movie will be its own topic. Every Friday, the next member in line will create a new topic with the name of the movie in the subject line. After watching the movie, members will individually confirm that they watched the movie of the week by posting HATA-HATA at the top of their comment. (Hata-Hata being a phrase Gungans use in TPM and AOTC.)
If everybody has watched the movie before the week is through, we can allow for two movies in one week, but we can worry about how to go about that when and if it happens.
Thoughts everyone?

While I do highly welcome the recommendation of lesser known features here, being an avid critic of modern blockbuster cinema, I'm not sure if I could get through a B movie like this one. I'd honestly prefer something in another language, if it was more compelling.
Also, yes, you're right: not an appropriate time for the library.
Moonshield Can you advice us on any Russian films? I'm sure there's been a few on the Romanov emperors?

I was mostly just goofing around with Hawk. I'm all up for watching it, of course (of course), but likewise with any other more sincere recommendations.

Are you under the impression that we all have to agree on the chosen movie? Because that's not how these things work.

No, that would indeed be a nightmare. I just worry the club would end up as a string of B movies.

I'm worried about it not happening at all. I don't think it should all be sleazy and cheap. There are plenty of gems on youtube, if you look.

Okay, aside from lesser known movies on youtube, can you browse youtube and find the movies section? There's a subsection called Free to Watch. This might differ from country to country. Would you be open to trying that?

Or we could make each streaming service its own section with youtube being one of them.

Moonshield Can you advice us on any Russian films? I'm sure there's been a few on the Romanov emperors? Russian films are badly made. I myself don't watch them, except two or three. Soviet, maybe. For example: The Shield and the Sword (1968)
But how to watch - it isn't even voiced. Only subtitles.

Wow, great music. Just like Star Wars opening titles. Also, one of my favourite comedy movies of all time is The Girls (1961)

Moonshield In Russia, do you not have a "Wild Wild East" movie genre? Because to me as neither Russian nor American, I see considerable historical parallels.
