Although he was a Jedi, he didn't become a public figure until he started the separatist movement, something he did openly. But he had disappeared for the last decade, ever since he left the Jedi Order. From the film script: I find this explanation of Dooku's departure from the Jedi fascinating and wish it was in the film. Many people agree with Dooku's position that the Jedi betrayed themselves by serving a corrupt senate. I'm not sure what I think of that, but it's a fascinating conflict. Especially that they continued to serve the senate once Palpatine acquired emergency powers and involved them in the war.

Why exactly is Dooku described as "mysterious" in the opening crawl? He was a prominent Jedi for several decades before that. Has he been in hiding since leaving the Jedi? Running the Separatist Movement behind the scenes like a Bin-laden type? I think the "mysterious" description has two explanations. The in-universe reason and story telling reason. I think from the story telling perspective it was a way for Lucas to further push the whole "mystery" aspect of the movie. He wanted to make sure that we, the audience, paid attention to the name because it meant something. He was in essence tipping his hand by telling the audience something was up with Dooku. From the in universe perspective, I think being a "prominent" Jedi is a bit relative. To the billions of citizens of the Republic, of whom the vast vast vast majority of which have never seen a Jedi, Dooku was not known from any other Jedi, until he pops up as the leader of the Separatists, and now he is a known name. So to the billions of people of the Republic, who is this ex-Jedi that is now leading an opposition party that is giving the Jedi a headache across the galaxy. Dooku may not have even been widely known to must Senators. It doesn't seem Dooku was ever on the Council, so his interactions with the government entities would be limited. Even the Jedi themselves, who knew Dooku personally, are operating under the wrong assumption that he is the same person that they once knew him as. He pops back up after 10 years and their arrogance leads them to believe he is in this for the politics and not for nefarious reasons because he was once a Jedi himself. Personally I like how the mystery of Count Dooku and his character's role slowly unfolds in intervals throughout the film, in tandem with the plot of the film. First he's mysterious, leading the Separatist movement. Then we learn he used to be Jedi, intriguing! Then we learn he was Qui-Gon's master. Then we see he's turned to the dark side. Then we learn he's Sidious' new apprentice and the one who hired Jango Fett to be the template for the Clone Army. I see some... detractors argue that Lucas just haphazardly threw in a line about Dooku once being a Jedi near the beginning of the film simply because we don't see Dooku until halfway though, and that this was a cheap, easy way to introduce the character Here's another question I've always had: was Dooku aware Obi-Wan was spying on him while meeting with the Separatist leaders? Wanting Kenobi to relate the proper intel to the Republic so as to lure the Jedi w/Clone Army to Geonosis to start the war?

Wanting Kenobi to relate the proper intel to the Republic so as to lure the Jedi w/Clone Army to Geonosis to start the war? I do not think Dooku was aware of Obi Wan's spying at that moment. If Dooku had known that Obi Wan was watching and listening, than Dooku would not have protested at the idea of being in charge later on when he is talking to a captive Obi Wan. If DOoku knew that Obi had overheard them, than Dooku would have known that Obi Wan knew he was full of shit. Dooku doesn't realize that Obi Wan has now caught him in a blatant lie, which now gives Obi Wan the standing to doubt everything DOoku is saying, but, not totally dismiss. I think there is a big gap between what Darth Sidious knows is going on, and what he relates to his apprentice. We see this in ROTJ and ROTS. Sidious does not fill Vader in on his plans to trap the Rebellion, and Palpatine does not inform Dooku of his true intentions for Anakin. I think Sidious held much of the intricacies of his plan close to the vest in order to avoid any of his apprentices trying to alter the plan to their benefit.

I can’t help but notice a slight similarly in the name Dooku and the Pali word in Buddhist text Dukkha, which means suffering or unsatisfactoriness. Fear, anger, hate lead to Dukkha. And I like how Lucas pronounces Dooku; doe-ku. It’s also pretty cool that Christopher Lee can trace his family lineage to Charlemagne. I just also thought about the fact it is Paul Abram Dukas who composed The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The song from Fantasia.
