This place in Moscow is called "Beverly Hills Diner". It is a simple small restaurant, designed in the US 50s style. I felt myself like I am in Mel's Drive-In. Great. Betty Boop in Jessica Rabbit's dress. My table. Jeanne Crain. She is gorgeous. Betty and Elvis. Production design. P.S. The burger and the coffee were incredible.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see that little of the US in Russia these days, given the way things are going.
Do you have to access this website via a VPN now?

Nice! Anything with a dash of Elvis and 50s Americana is fine by me. And in Russia! I'm pleasantly surprised to see that little of the US in Russia these days, given the way things are going. Do you have to access this website via a VPN now?
Yes. What's going on, Moonshield ? Putin's thugs haven't rounded you up yet? www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-62992365Someone needs to end that creep and confine Putinism and all would-be rivals to the dustbin of history, pronto.

Unsettling. Betty Boop isn't even a product of the '50s pop-era but the 1930s, while Marilyn and Elvis look like nightmare-fuel renditions of themselves. The whole tableau vaguely evokes, of all things, Doomtown from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ...a movie wherein Indy negotiates Red Scare paranoia and squares off against Russians.
I guess what I'm saying is: I dig it.
We should open a Soviet Bloc themed cafe here stateside.

None of us want to see you conscripted, Moonshield . We know you've already got military experience, and are still of fighting age.
Not worth dying over, man, not worth it.
Your absence on the forum since the start of the war has been noticed.

Yes. Stay safe, Moonshield, my man. There are few -- if any -- real "just wars", and this one definitely doesn't qualify. Putin is a scourge on the modern world and the closest thing to Palpatine right now. He needs to be gone.

Betty Boop is a nice touch despite being from the 30's.

Yes, that's true -- might be why Elvis never entirely recaptured his early 1950s energy and vitality. However, there was also a dark undercurrent to many things, and a certain conformity and rigidity was still the norm. Segregation was still in force, for example. The parodic 1950s town in the last "Indiana Jones" film, as highlighted by Ingram , brilliantly encapsulates these unsettling undertones; the whole thing is even an elaborate visual pun on the idea of the picture-perfect "nuclear" family (such as familial life and much of society was conceived back then).

Imagine if the Russian provisional government of the original revolution of 1917 had withstood the Bolchevik coup, and Russia consolidated itself into a democracy and social market economy like the rest of Europe. Or even the Whites wining the Russian Civil War (with proper Western support), and evolving into a steady, constitutional monarchy like Britain.
How much happier we would all be. No 70 odd years of wasted rivalry, silly communist world revolution and isolation from one another. No suddenly becoming aware of consumer goods in the 1990s, which had been taken for granted by Westerners for decades.
Star Wars premiering in Moscow in 1977. Imagine that.
Let's not repeat this tragedy again. Let's choose peace. Lets choose cultural exchange.
