I liked the first four Harry Potter movies, but lost interest once they switched to David Yates as the director. I think it's obvious from the Fantastic Beasts movies that he just isn't very good.

I'm not sure how many Potter fans there are around here, though I also quit after the 4th film. For different reasons than Seeker though, I was scared of the movies as a kid.

Not gonna weigh in on the JK Rowling controversy, but from my understanding she's a far more hated figure within her own fandom than George ever has been. Not to mention the Harry Potter fandom is somehow more toxic than ours.

So, there's going to be a reboot of HP as a show now. Despite being a fan of the franchise, I couldn't be more disinterested. The whole thing reeks of a desperate cash grab after the failure of the Fantastic Beasts series. The first four Potter films are precious to me, and I don't want to see them remade with a new cast. It's almost as bad in my opinion as if Lucas' Star Wars films were remade by Disney. They're classics. I'm slightly curious if the latter four adaptations could be improved by another director, but the fact it's a show instead of films is something I don't care for.
The Potter film series is a curious artefact for me. I don't think there is a better case study for the importance of a director with a vision vs. the studio. I can't think of a series of films that deteriorates as much with the change of the director. The first four films are timeless fantasy adventure stories, while the latter four are to me unwatchably bad, generic YA schlock. Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuaron and Mike Newell are fantastic directors with unique and bold styles that shine through their movies. David Yates, on the other hand, is the most milquetoast studio hired gun with nothing to say. He sucked out all the magic and life out of the series. I was amazed that it took until the Fantastic Beasts movies for most people to see how terrible he is.
