Seeker of the Whills -- That moment has always stuck out to me, too (in a good way). Violence doesn't really suit Qui-Gon. Meditation does. He prospers with one, dies with the other. And accompanied by a hydraulic "pssssst". In fact, I just re-watched the entire scene, and noticed something neat in the sound design: Obi-Wan actually disguises the opening and closing of the compartment door by activating it as Padme's ship is taking off. The sounds of the ship's engines powering up and the degassing of the vessel perfectly overlap with the door sound. A really nice detail. And this mundane event, like all shots in Star Wars, has a purpose. In this case, in addition to making clear Obi-Wan has used deception to find Anakin, it's to put an appropriate (and somewhat ironic) punctuation mark on the human cost of confronting Anakin. In AOTC, Obi-Wan lightly scolds Anakin for using Padme as "bait". And here in ROTS, this is exactly what he is doing -- well, from a certain point of view. Also, even this mundane event has some evocative symbolism: Obi-Wan hiding himself and re-appearing "when the time is right" (or, indeed, disastrously wrong). There's even a nice contrast with Obi-Wan fighting Jango in the previous film: Aggressive door opening with the Force vs... Politely using the button: And politely closing with a gentle application of the Force: Character growth. Obi-Wan even treats doors more kindly as he matures. Some other resonances: Door closing on the other surviving Jedi of the PT who also secretes himself into a small space: In Episode II, again on Kamino, Boba calmly closes the door to the compartment where Obi-Wan spies Jango's armour: This one is funny -- and perhaps symbolic of the "going in circles" plotline of the film... Obi-Wan emerges from the main door to confront Jango on the landing platform: Then he falls and has to make his way through the same door again, just in the nick of time to hurl the tracking device onto Jango's ship: "It's possible he was conceived by the midi-chlorians."

I know I am making myself guilty of a double post, but I don't think this is much of an issue here.
I like that this one of made of almost solely black and white and still shows the distinctive "digital gloss" of the Prequels. That dark figure in the left is actually Palpatine and I like how he appears to be cutting Anakin off from the light of the lamp and how that lamp seems to be in contrast to that black vase hiding Palpatine dirty dark side secrets^^
Hayden also carries himself in a way that makes you really feel the burden. Like that!

My annual viewing continues. Where last week I dished some material for the OT thread I now find myself back here, having commenced my 2nd week with the Prequels. I almost considered skipping these given how much has been extrapolated already with a thread now 5 pages strong. Almost. I still think there's some trinkets and curiosities to consider. Today, The Phantom Menace... Viewfinder geometry. Neeson's visage really was well utilized in this movie; Qui-Gon seen here as a shadow-framed Sohei. "Yeah?"
Still one of my favorite panning reveals. The glow of it along with Williams' hushed choir'd ambiance. Lucas' longing ambitions now finally realized. Much larger worlds.
Just an incredibly complex array of light, textures, models, plates and set-design all glimpsed through some peculiar hangar bay door framing.
Geography thrift.
Padme a large form in little Anakin's orbit. It's an old language but Lucas always understood the compositional value of keeping your characters in foreground coverage...
...here, the Kurosawa-Leone touch in modest fashion.
Some Jedis sit atop jeweled towers. Others walk at ease through junkyards.
A quirky offset amidst Lucas' otherwise formalist visual language: Anakin's first-person POV of Padme in frame-broken soft focus, turning away from the camera. Little boys see girls in fleeting perspectives.
Interestingly, such dead-centering of the audience is all over Episode I, something that distanced it a bit from the other installments.
AniCap.
It still amazes me how much thematic resonance these movies communicate through the simplest of imagery. Humble story glyphs.

Team Lucasberg will forever hold a certain merit badge for their fantastical desert-set escapism.
When Star Wars still used scaled live-action explosions.
Something about little Anakin... at times he's almost like a Don Bluth character.

Alexandre Dumas writ space pulp. Even on paper Episode I (the PT at a certain length) evokes plot mechanics and dramatic stakes vaguely similar to those of The Three Musketeers and The Man in the Iron Mask.

This is almost a meta moment, as the three "fates" are separated by film cell negatives.
This always struck me as a plainly Biblical-like image.

I just wanted it all in one place. Well, I guess it is all in one place: Naberrie Fields. Speaking o' which: Anakin getting a face full of cowpat. A Jedi turd. Maybe, when Anakin said he slaughtered the Tuskens "like animals", he secretly wanted revenge on those recalcitrant shaaks. Hey, man. That's been me for the past twenty years. Nice! Goes well with the opening shot. This sense of surreal vertiginalism may also have been experienced by people who saw the IMAX version of AOTC. There's a more striking juxtaposition here. If I may: Jar Jar passes the Olympic swimmer baton to Anakin: Seduction, discovery, rejection, and loss at a place of fire. Anakin is the Promethean Jedi that wants to forget: "Aim right above the fuel cells."Those scenes are Anakin's hidden hearths/chambers -- sources of pain he wants erased. It was, appropriately enough, Pyrogenic who first described these meanings, many years ago. Anyway, if that's too flighty or esoteric for you, you can't deny that George Lucas chooses images and words carefully. Yep. Also: Orthogonal gatherings. Light injection. Abiogenesis. Very good. AOTC is beautifully blocked and framed -- it's just the opposite of what fan-normies say. Anakin and Padme do quite an elaborate "dance" around one another in this movie. Like Lucas has said, his movies are (almost) "all in the visuals". And the amber curtain in the meditation scene: I knew a girl as beautiful as Natalie Portman. Similar in temperament to Padme in this movie, actually -- e.g.: "We live in a real world. Come back to it."Some of those lines cut hard. Jango faceplanting like Anakin earlier. Also this: Millennium Falcon shadows, even. Good call, my fellow Nubian! Now, that's just showing off! Fascinating allusion. Also: the four "strings" of fate: (Whatever characters or concepts you hold those to be). It's true. AOTC very nearly ends on a flower pot. The best Star Wars movie.

Just wanted to add one additional image/comment to Ingram's set: No matter where you go in life, what you achieve, or what you become, you will never be as cool as Episode II Obi-Wan swinging his saber in the rain: Swingin' in the rain, just swingin' in the rain...
