In 2019 I saw the musical Anastasia an adaptation of the 1997/1956 films about the lost Russian princess. It's better than the movies. Even though it was proven that the Grand Duchess was executed with her family, the musical imagines Anastasia surviving her family's massacre and finding her grandmother in Paris and it's surprisingly accurate in regards to Russian history. It removes the Rasputin/Bartok subplot (which I felt was all for the better) and focuses more on the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Soviet Union by introducing a new "anti-villain" named Gleb, who is tasked with hunting down and killing Anya/Anastasia. The musical also expands on the lives of the ex-Russian aristocrats as they have to come to grips with their new status as ex-patriates. Five songs from the 1997 film are in the musical, but some new songs have been introduced as well - and they're just as good as the old ones. Rasputin's villain song has been re-worked into a haunting song called "Stay, I Pray You" and the train scene in the movie is portrayed far more seriously on the stage. I bought the soundtrack recently and even some merchandise from the official store. If Anastasia ever comes to your neck of the woods, check it out, you'll love it, I promise.
