Some have said my list is upside-down. 1. Attack of the Clones 2. The Phantom Menace 3. Return of the Jedi 4. Revenge of the Sith 5. A New Hope 6. The Empire Strikes Back ROTJ has risen in my estimation over the past few years because it took me a while to appreciate how beautifully bonkers it all is compared to the rest of the OT. And AOTC has had the top spot for me since its DVD release. I was hoping ROTS would have unseated it but AOTC has some extravagant choices that, for me, weren't topped by the succeeding film.
I think AOTC is the Star Wars movie where Lucas really unleashed his full "abstract cinema" power, on the action sequences on Geonosis. I love it 😁

I like ROTJ well enough and the throne room scenes are my favorite in the saga. Admittedly, they became a lot better after the PT. It's just other plot lines (Jabba and Endor) drag for too long.
My local Regal theater held a marathon of all six saga films followed by the premiere of TFA when TFA was released in 2015. I attended and sat through the entire presentation (getting up only twice and only in-between films) and I distinctly recall the throne room scenes in ROTJ feeling far more weightier and profound than usual. Under those conditions, I felt the colossal burden on Luke's shoulders during those scenes like never before. For me, the entire experience really cemented the notion Lucas has floated a few times of his saga being one big film.
I get the charge of dragging on for too long - especially compared to the PT. In Paul Duncan's (author of Taschen's 'The Star Wars Archives' books) recent interview, he talks about each of the PT films being roughly 3x the size of each OT film in terms of scenes and locations. For all that added density, the resulting PT films are astoundingly tight and well-paced. I feel most films suffer in comparison - even the OT entries. Weirdly enough, I don't want to skip through any scenes in ANH except maybe droids' track on Tatooine. It's actually very dense but we're just so used to it now we don't notice. There're even some political undercurrents with factions of the Imperial officers at odds with each other, Vader as a Dark Side Priest clearly upset about the technological terror taking his place as Emperor's main killing machine, mention of the Senate, Taking somehow knowing who Vader used to be. Well, none of it really gets explored in the sequels, rebels and imperials become merely statists to Luke's journey until the final battle at Endor. Even Leia and Han mostly serve as bait in TESB. Gimme some Senate backroom meetings any time With the PT I actually want to know more about various Jedi, Separatist Leaders, clones, Senators. In what way did Qui-Gon disagree with the Council before? What did Anakin's Jedi peers think about his exceptional situation? Why doesn't he have any friends except Obi-Wan? How does Obi-Wan know Dex and why Dex is so knowledgeable about bounty hunter stuff? Do they have any law enforcement on Tatooine that sand people can randomly kidnap and kill people? I feelAOTC or ROTS could've easily been a 10 hour TV season (if you throw in some Clone Wars stuff).

Why doesn't he have any friends except Obi-Wan? He doesn't? I'm sure he does but we don't see it in the movies. I don't know if it's because Lucas didn't have time to show them or if it's a deliberate choice. He did have friends as a kid, after all. Come to think of it, all adult Anakin's interactions happen with people older than him.

Right on!
It's the lightsaber duel in the dark that takes home top prize for me. It's ferociously bold and happens to contain the only spatial continuity break in the entire saga. That second-long moment is perhaps the most significant in the whole sexology.

I've seen a few YT ranking videos that place AOTC and TPM somewhere at the bottom (even below some of the ST) but put ROTS #1 or close. When ROTS came out it made the first prequels better for me because of all foreshadowing but apparently most people disagree. Star Wars Theory (and of course Rick Worley) are about the only ones that put all of Lucas's 6 higher than the sequels.

1. Revenge of the Sith 2. Attack of the Clones 3. The Phantom Menace I almost can't decide. The prequels keep changing places for me so often. RotS is a tour de force through and through, but it's so heavy that it's almost hard to watch sometimes. In AotC, I love the Blade Runner-esque Coruscant section, Obi-Wan's detective mission, the painterly beauty of the romance, Anakin's search for his mother, and the big epic Clone War at the end. So everything. TPM has Qui-Gon, Maul, Podracing, more politics, more Naboo. Tough choice. They're all so great.

I can decide on a top 3, but then after that everything else is basically tied and I have a hell of a time ranking the movies. Although...maybe it is more true to say I can decide on a #1, and then everything else after that depends on my mood. As you have pointed out, how does one choose between the detective plot, painterly romance (And Padme looking hotter than Mustafar in those Trisha Biggar costumes) and pod-racing, and Duel of the Fates, etc!? It can't be done!

1.) Attack Of The Clones This movie is just brilliant in every way. Each of the characters is challenged, the story line is fasinating, the visuals are endlessly ambitious and it opened the galaxy in ways not previously imagined. I can't help but love Anakin as a character in this episode, George wrote him in a brutally honest way and Hayden did really pull that off. 2. Revenge Of The Sith The movie that got me hooked on Star Wars. 3. A New Hope This movie was probably the most enhanced by the Prequels and it works so well as a follow-up to ROTS.
4. The Phantom Menace 5. The Empire Strikes Back 6. Return Of The Jedi

This thread proves that we are in prequel appreciation forum. AOTC, my favorite saga movie, is often treated as " the poor relative" in the family (because "at least TPM has some OT vibes", you know. Is not that I don't like TPM, I just quote the cliche.). And here, surprise, surprise is highly appreciated. A pleasant surprise for sure, while unexpected one.

AOTC is a defining chapter of the prequels (just like TESB is the defining one from the OT). I wish Lucas made another prequel movie to refine the style.

Y'all be gushing over AOTC all of a sudden (with respect to new replies appearing in this thread), and damn! I had a whole post planned out about the weirdness of AOTC, and it being, in many ways, the thematic core -- or sink hole -- of the PT. Blegh! I'm never gonna remember it now. In any case, it was mostly composed of quotes of earlier posts I made on TFN, so yeah: if you've read those, you already know what I was planning to say. AOTC rocks. It also grooves. And most of it all, it funks. Cypherfunk.

I always said AOTC was my sentimental favorite even when the general "consensus" was it was the worst of the bunch. TPM grew on me but AOTC was love at first sight (and ROTS, too). Wouldn't be a Star Wars fan without these two movies (clarification: GL's Star Wars, of course).

The other two are just the thin, dry, black cookie parts that make you thirsty. Attack of the Clones is the creamy filling. I'm sure Cr(P)y(r)o will illuminate how said cookies may in fact serve as the film's dual, duplicated symbology, the first and third entry walling in the center, sugar-frosted romance storyline. And (t)he(y) may be right.

I'll never be able to pick a favorite SW movie, but after years of being transfixed on AotC I've realized it's because it's basically the epicenter of the saga.
Or, as I've said elsewhere, everything you need to know about Star Wars is in Episodes II and VI. If you could only show someone two SW films, I'd say those are the meat & potatoes.
I also think it's when we can really say, in some ways, in a lot of ways; Star Wars... you've grown up.

All six are pretty close to each other:
ANH TPM ROTS AOTC TESB ROTJ
The top 3 have remained the same for many years. The bottom 3 are more volatile and will change depending on my mood.
