So, that "idea" Snyder once pitched to Disney/Lucasfilm for a SW feature...
I can only categorize this thus far as: all the things.
Having conceived the story and co-written the screenplay, Snyder is not exactly one for originality, as evident as ever here. I feel like I just watched a trailer for an attempted mega reboot of the entirety of sci-fi/fantasy tent-pole franchisedom circa 1977 to 2023. That alone is ballsy, I suppose. And there remains his signature commitment to shock-rock-video style & melodramatized presentation. You can't say he isn't going for it.

Looks at least more exciting and interesting than anything coming from "real" Star Wars at the moment. It reminds me of the Chronicles of Riddick, which was a similar B-movie hodgepodge of sci-fi and fantasy tropes. Lucasfilm probably passed on this idea because it wasn't just a rehash of old stories and characters. I believe Snyder said that he pitched a story with original characters. The beginning of Man of Steel is a masterpiece to me, and this looks to be more of that. I'm in.

It has potential. I mean, as Ingram said, it is "all the things," all the things that I love, that is (or damn near at least).

Weird, it reminds me of a story I came up with when I was like 19. Even the Jena Malone character is oddly similar.

I'm finding this trailer surprisingly rewatchable and entertaining. This is the first trailer in years that has sparked my imagination in any kind of meaningful way. I really do hope this succeeds, because it feels very ambitious. When was the last time that a big budget blockbuster created an all-new mythology, something not based on a book or a comic? Jupiter Ascending is the closest thing I can think of, and that was almost a decade ago.

24% - critics, 76% - audiences. Skimming over excerpts from the former, as is often the case, I find the results more encouraging than not. I'll probably wait until next week, Tuesday or Wednesday, to sit down and watch it.

Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but so far I'm really liking it. Visually incredible, well acted, good music. It's way more affecting than any of Disney's Star Wars, at least.

Just finished it, and I loved it. The third act got a little iffy, and the story presented here wasn't fully satisfying unto itself, but it was a very good episode one and I'm excitedly looking forward to the second episode. I will say that if Zack Snyder rubbed you the wrong way before, this film is unlikely to convince you of his greatness.

I liked it. I do think The Avengers and Seven Samurai made it more entertaining to watch all of the warriors gathered together one by one, but this still manages to be entertaining albeit with a very episodic structure which will be too tedious for some.
A lot of it is familiar, but it manages some slight variations on the material. Sofia Boutella is a very likeable lead too. The additional homage to Gladiator is also relevant to the material.
I like that this is so reliant on sets, because sets allow for a non-realistic aesthetic that I like.
Part II looks to be more promising, though, and I imagine this will play better when viewed back to back as one movie. I won't be surprised if this grows on me during repeat viewings.

The best way to describe the experience of watching this movie is a line from it: "Hit him with everything." It's got Star Wars, Seven Samurai, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Blade Runner, Matrix, Gladiator, and others all mashed into one awesome blend of Zack Snyder slowmo goodness. This series may become my new obsession going forward, since Disney's Star Wars seems to be so stagnant.

The movie offers too much Lord of the Rings and not enough Star Wars for my taste. It's also devoid of any humour, which made it quite tedious for me. Not bad, but just average. In my opinion.

I honestly only made it twenty minutes in. Reminded me of an Indian TV drama, or Catwoman starring Halle Berry. Seriously, I know I'm out of touch, but I really never imagined a universe where people would be watching this unironically.

Interesting comparisons. Have you seen the movie Chronicles of Riddick? It's a similar premise with a blend of LotR and SW. This is like a higher budget version of that. The beginning of this movie was a little rough for me too, but I honestly think it picks up when the bad guys show up.

What I'm getting at is that the acting, the casting, really the whole look of the movie reminds me of, not quite soap opera, but TV, especially foreign TV or TV made for children. "What do they want?" "Everything." 🙄
